i was astonished to see that a big club such as Hamilton defaulted a board in the final; Sad

Not an easy position to play for white though unfortunately - the queen and knight against an exposed king are a dangerous force.

Our main problem was on the higher boards - we just didn't produce the goods yesterday. Alan Tate and Mark Orr couldn't get anywhere, Nicol fought hard, whereas I played a horrible 13th move (inexplicable as I understood the position very well) after which Robert played very well to finish me off. The top 4 boards are where I would expect our main chances to lie, but BA neutralised us very easily.

If I ever win this trophy I'm definitely going to put it as my Facebook profile picture so that the world knows I've won the toughest competition in Scotland, the Richardson cup! :-bd Tongue

Unfortunately seems to be more common, I remember sitting for hours with no game in our Final V Troon as they defaulted board 6

sad to hear Andy; Troon, like Hamilton have many regular players and lots of talented juniors who could do a good job on board 6. To have the anticipation of playing in a final then to sit it out is very disappointing. However i'm sure both clubs will have been disappointed to turn up short of a player.

I know from speaking to one of the players yesterday he was "not best pleased..."

We played Hamilton in the Spens QF, in the days prior to the match their captain was struggling to raise a team. They did manage to get 6 in the end. It did surprise me given the size of the club. But then I had similar bother raising a team for our Rosebowl match, it is always more difficult to get a team together for away matches with travel required. If I am not mistaken there was 1 default in the Richardson's during an earlier round and this would be the only default in the Spens. Not ideal but it could be a lot worse.

The change to a 5 board structure to the Spens is going to solve these problems next season, while making travel arrangements easier, and is a good call by Keith.

The Spens is clearly struggling as a tournament and in terms of interest to play in it. My club was a last minute entry and that only made it a respectful 8 team knockout. I have suggested a central venue format on set dates given at start of season to Keith, much like the SNCL. Not sure if other clubs have an appetite for that structure, be it the Richardson's or Spens?

I'd like to see the Spens jazzed up, and the potential is there for it to become a 16 team tournament.

I also think we should do away with the snack/refreshment rule. It is just giving team captains extra stress and requiring further club expenditure.

The thing I like most about the richardson from my perspective up in aberdeen is that we actually get to play some chess near to us in a lot of the matches. Too often people suggest "central" venues such as Edinburgh Chess club (which is indeed in the centre of edinburgh) rather than centre of scotland venues such as Perth (roughly equidistant to aberdeen edinburgh glasgow - in other words everyone is equally unhappy but thats compromise for you!).

Am going to moot the possibility of Bon Accord playing a B team in the Spens - I was actually thinking it was 8 boards so if its 5 then it should be quite likely.

Ah, but there's a heck of a lot more Weegies than Teuchters. Stirling, if you have to...
