Megafinals 2013
Posted by: Phil Thomas - 27-04-2013, 10:19 PM - Forum: Junior Chess Chat - Replies (1)

Congratulations to the Michael Hanley and Andy Howie the joint tournament directors of the Megafinal West. The U11 sections ran today at Airdrie started on time & prize giving was actually completed a few minutes before it was due to start. Thanks also to all the parents and teachers who brought along all those well behaved juniors. It was a pleasure to be a part of the control team.

Good luck to Andy and Mike for the U12 to U18 sections tomorrow; to Edinburgh for their Megafinal tomorrow; and likewise to Aberdeen for their Megafinal on the 4th of May.

 Loss of Grant
Posted by: Andy Howie - 21-04-2013, 11:40 AM - Forum: General Chess Chat - Replies (41)

Morning everyone,

I want to make this clear, I am posting here as Andy Howie the person, not Exec Dir, Mod or anything else that I happen to do in chess in Scotland.

I am frustrated at the loss of the grant. What really sticks in my throat is I speak to my European counterparts frequently and I know how badly off we are in comparison with other Euro countries. Andorra, for example gets 6 times the amount we get and it is the size of Cumbernauld!

I don't particularly want to take this lying down. That unfortunately is not my style. I am thinking of writing to my MSP and wondered if I can get everyone to do the same. Nothing focuses a politicians mind when they have their locals upset about something!

Scottish Blitz - Revised Entry Fee
Posted by: Jonathan Edwards - 20-04-2013, 07:10 PM - Forum: Tournaments and Events - Replies (2)

Hi all

I am posting to make everyone aware of the revised adult entry fee for the Scottish Blitz. The adult entry fee has now increased to £20 to ensure the financial viability of the tournament now that further costs have been confirmed.

In other news, Mickey Adams and Arkadij Naiditsch are confirmed participants!

I still feel that the tournament is great value and £10 cheaper than last year. Thanks for the support that has made the event possible.

 3rd Big Slick International 22nd-30th June 2013
Posted by: amuir - 16-04-2013, 09:00 AM - Forum: Tournaments and Events - Replies (1)

Hi Andrew,

Could you circulate this to any Scottish players who you think might be interested, particularly any of those who already have title norms. I've very limited space for non titled players but reasonable availability for FMs and IMs.

Best wishes,
Lawrence Cooper
International Organiser

The main regulations are as follows:

I am pleased to announce that the 3rd Big Slick International will take place from the 22nd to 30th June at the following address:

BIG SLICK, UNIT 10, ROYAL OAK CENTRE, BRIGHTON ROAD, PURLEY, SURREY CR8 2BG ENGLAND

Tournament format: FIDE rated 10 player, nine round, all-play-alls with one game per day. There will be at least one GM and one IM norm section. Other sections may be added subject to sufficient interest.

The entry fees are as follows:

GM norm event: £200 for titled players (IM/WGM/WIM/FM/WFM); £300 for non-titled.

IM norm events: £100 for titled players (WGM/WIM/FM/WFM); £150 for non-titled.

Players registered as ENG on the FIDE rating list will need to be gold or platinum ECF members.

The closing date for payment of entry fees will be 30th April and the number of sections will be decided according to entries received by 31st March.

The Chief Arbiter will be International Arbiter David Sedgwick. Simon Williams and myself will co-organise the event.

The time limit will be 90 minutes for 40 moves + 30 minutes with 30 seconds cumulative increment for each move starting from the first move. All rounds will start at 12.00.

Players arriving one hour or more after the start of a round shall lose, unless the arbiter decides otherwise.

I would like to thank The Big Slick club for generously providing their club free of charge for the duration of the tournament, The Friends of Chess for their generous donation and the John Robinson Trust for their contribution towards junior entry fees for the event.

Players wishing to play should contact me at lozcooper@hotmail.com

 Edinburgh Congress grading
Posted by: andyburnett - 16-04-2013, 08:24 AM - Forum: Ask the Grader - Replies (6)

I've just been looking at the Edinburgh Congress grading data and apparently I scored a 2248 performance (against my 2249 CS grade).

I thought I had gained a few points or (if my round 4 opponent from Australia who has a FIDE rating but no CS grading is discounted) lost a few?!

How do the calculations work for this and would the FIDE rating of this opponent count towards my CS grading?

Thanks in advance,
Andy Burnett
