Loss of Grant - Andy Howie - 21-04-2013

Morning everyone,

I want to make this clear, I am posting here as Andy Howie the person, not Exec Dir, Mod or anything else that I happen to do in chess in Scotland.

I am frustrated at the loss of the grant. What really sticks in my throat is I speak to my European counterparts frequently and I know how badly off we are in comparison with other Euro countries. Andorra, for example gets 6 times the amount we get and it is the size of Cumbernauld!

I don't particularly want to take this lying down. That unfortunately is not my style. I am thinking of writing to my MSP and wondered if I can get everyone to do the same. Nothing focuses a politicians mind when they have their locals upset about something!

What reasons did they give for knocking us back? Are there any changes we can make to improve our chances of funding? Is there an appeal process? Shocking news though Sad

Re: Loss of Grant - David G Congalton - 21-04-2013

I have copied the notifcation below, from the head of funding.

Whilst no feedback has been received yet, I have looked at the list of recipients and I could not argue that any of them are not deserving. They all seem to fall into a particular category of support or service provider, which Chess Scotland does not.

Quote:Dear Applicant,

Thank you for your recent application/s to the Third Sector Early Intervention Fund.

We are sorry to advise you that your application/s has been unsuccessful.

We will write to you by the end of April to give you more detailed feedback on your application/s. We realise this news will be very disappointing for you and your organisation but would ask that you wait until you receive your formal detailed feedback letter before contacting us.

Details of the Third Sector Early Intervention Fund announcement can be found here http://bigblogscotland.org.uk/2013/04/18/tseifawards/

We recognise the considerable demand from the sector for funding to support children, young people and families. Improving outcomes for these groups remains a key priority for BIG’s own lottery funded programmes, particularly Supporting 21st Century Life and Life Transitions and we are always keen to discuss ways we could do more.

You can find out more about our funding on our website www.biglotteryfund.org.uk

As your organisation is currently funded through Scottish Government’s Unified Voluntary Sector Fund, the Early Years Early Action Fund or the Community Learning and Development HQ funds, transitional funding will be available for the three month period from 1 May to 31 July 2013, in line with the Scottish Government Compact with the third sector. The purpose of the transitional funding is to provide support in finding alternative funding sources or to meet statutory requirements in relation to staff. There is no need to take any action to secure transitional funding, as the Scottish Government will contact you directly.

Yours Faithfully,

Roddy Byers

Head of Funding (Scotland)

Re: Loss of Grant - David Deary - 21-04-2013

I have to say I am really disappointed by this. I'll leave it at that for now or else I'll get into trouble! =o

If anyone is interested - bodies who received funding are in the PDF below:
http://bigblogscotland.files.wordpress. ... awards.pdf

Edit to add:
I think CS was placed in a no win situation when you compare CS to some of the bodies on that list. If you look at the list and compare what CS does to these bodies you would think we were applying for the wrong grant! (Which we weren't but that's my point)

Re: Loss of Grant - David Deary - 21-04-2013

I have contacted my local MSP (Kenneth Gibson) and I walk past his constituency office every lunch time so I'll drop in and try to get a meeting with him. I would advise as many people as possible to do the same with their elected representatives.

I cannot believe we have the honour of hosting the Chess Commonwealth Championships next year and this is the kind of response we get from our Government. It beggars belief.

Tourette Scotland
£51,840

I think between us we might have done enough today to deserve a share of this Tongue

Re: Loss of Grant - amuir - 21-04-2013

will we have enough money to host Commonwealth Champs and go to Norway Olympiad next year ?

Re: Loss of Grant - Adam Bremner - 21-04-2013

How much money were we actually getting, and where was the majority of it going? I.e. where is the area that will be losing out?
