Chess books for Christmas - what to ask for?
Posted by: andyburnett - 29-11-2013, 09:22 PM - Forum: General Chess Chat - Replies (3)

I quite fancy a couple of chess books appearing under the tree with my name on the tags come Christmas Day.

Preferably instructive with a 'workbook' element: something along the lines of Jacob Aagaard's 'Calculation' in his Grandmaster Preparation series which I am currently enjoying. (Are the other books in this series also worth buying?)

Does anyone have any suggestions? I do have most/all of the 'classics', so something more recent perhaps?

Lothian Junior Chess - New Website - New Name
Posted by: Mike Scott - 25-11-2013, 07:35 AM - Forum: General Chess Chat - Replies (1)

I am very pleased to be able to announce the launching of the new website for Lothian Junior Chess, formally Lothian Primary School Chess League (LPSCL):-

http://www.lothianjuniorchess.org.uk

The new site represents both a make over and a dramatic updating of functionality that will make it easier to add content: both by LJC but also external authors and I would welcome contact from anyone who might wish to submit articles - be that to highlight an event or about some other chess issue of interest to Lothian juniors.

Similarly organisers of events that might be of relevance to Lothian juniors are invited to send details to myself to have them placed on the site's calender.

The site is still 'work in progress' and any suggestions and comments, which can be made via the feedback form, are most welcome.

Advice for getting funding/sponsors for a club.
Posted by: Jonathan Livingstone - 22-11-2013, 04:10 PM - Forum: General Chess Chat - Replies (33)

I'm looking into this, and have identified a few local (large size) businesses. I was thinking of sending off some letters.

Has anyone had any success with persuading local employers and business to invest in their local community chess/clubs? Any advice from others experience is appreciated as am not quite sure how to approach this as yet.

  Fantasy Variation?
Posted by: John Dempsey - 22-11-2013, 01:00 AM - Forum: General Chess Chat - Replies (1)

I know there are some Caro Kann players out there, and I would be interested to hear what you think Blacks best line is against the Fantasy Variation. I have played it once or twice in the past and it seemed to throw some spanners in the Black development. Comments?
