  Chess Scotland Event/ PVG
Posted by: Ianbrownlee - 11-11-2013, 07:22 PM - Forum: General Chess Chat - Replies (31)

while I'm at it what constitutes a Chess Scotland event and is the SNCL a Chess Scotland event. The reason I ask is that I cant tell which events are under the Chess Scotland umbrella.

I have had my PVG from Disclosure Scotland but I haven't registered it with Chess Scotland because quite frankly I felt I didn't need to. My indication from Disclosure Scotland is that I am answerable to them alone but I am going to double check this. From a tournament organiser point of view does that mean I have to bar myself from running or bar Juniors from playing in it. Dr Phil Thomas is a qualified and most competent arbiter so does this mean I cant use him as an arbiter? There was an occasion this year when the arbiter was running late and Michael Hanley stepped in. Again does this mean I cant do this or is for Chess Scotland events only. if this is the case what are the advantages of having a chess Scotland run event if it puts an extra overhead on the tournament. I honestly don't see why an arbiter has to be registered with Chess Scotland and why my PVG has to be registered with Chess Scotland either

  AGM/ Cpuncil meeting
Posted by: Ianbrownlee - 11-11-2013, 06:55 PM - Forum: General Chess Chat - Replies (24)

I've asked this a couple times before....

I understand from the AGM that because it was running over, it would conclude in November at the next council meeting with AOCB , a couple of motions and the finances audited. Well November is here and I haven't heard anything and as for the working party for the constitution.....

  Anand-Carlsen

I'm surprised there's been no thread on this so far ... so here goes!

Both players were among my five "Heroes of Classical Chess" (along with Rubinstein, Smyslov and Fischer). See Everyman Chess books.

They both play powerfully direct classical chess, which I loosely define (never forget that "style" in chess is an essentially fluid and intrinsically elusive quality) as: "a kind of universality ... that embraces all styles, in a sense, and transcends narrow boundaries ... based on such overarching attributes as clarity, energy, toughness, ambition and a fundamental sense of analytic 'correctness' ..."

For much more discussion and exploration of this style of play through history, read the book!

I expect Carlsen to shade it!!

  Another Coincidece.
Posted by: Geoff Chandler - 08-11-2013, 03:29 AM - Forum: General Chess Chat - Replies (1)

Hi

I've had more than my fair share of coincidences in chess.

Here are just two, I have dozens like it.

Once I drew a cartoon for my magazine where one player (Phil Condie)
knocked another player (Danny Kopec) off his bike.

Two weeks later Danny actually skidded and fell off his bike.
The next car to come along stopped to see if Danny was OK. It was driven by Phil Condie.
That is 100% true.

In 1990 I made a chess videa where I beat Bob Ford in a made up game with
me on the Black side of a Sicilian winning in 15 moves.
About 6 months later I played Bob in a league game and won as Black with a Sicilian in 15 moves!

On the Red Hot Pawn Blog I introduced a Duck as a sidekick to bounce ideas off.
It would ask the daft questions or crack silly jokes etc..etc...

Eventually The Duck set off on a tour around the world staying with RHP members
for a few days them moving on. USA, Canda, Mexico, Vietnam, South Africa, New Zealand...

This link was just sent to me.

It's not a fake.

Funny old world.
