A new allegro event for the calendar and diaries. Ideal for all players, especially those seeking last minute Grand Prix points. The allegro will take place on Saturday, May 17th at the Mercure Hotel in Livingston, which is easily accessible from Edinburgh, Glasgow and Central Scotland. The hotel is close to the towns main shopping area.

Play will most likely be 5 rounds from 10am until 4.30pm. Further details, entry forms and so on will appear soon.

Just a reminder SNCL is on next week 23rd Feb. The venue is being refurbished so we are in the other rooms not the main hall. However, I am sure everyone will fit okay.

  Frank Slotopolski
Posted by: Alan McGowan - 04-02-2014, 12:58 AM - Forum: General Chess Chat - Replies (3)

I am looking for further information about Frank Slotopolski [sometimes: Slotopolski Slater], born 1912, died 1987. There does not seem to have been an obituary in Scottish Chess.

Frank was associated with the Glasgow Jewish Institute CC, and the Glasgow League.
He donated the Slotopolski Trophy/Shield to the League. Can anyone confirm information about this trophy and/or supply a photograph? What was the trophy for? I have a reference from a Jewish Institute Yearbook (1954-55) that mentions a shield being given to the Glasgow Chess League to be used by the Third Division league members as their annual trophy. Could this be the Slotopolski Shield?

Other notes:
In 1950 his address was 330 Cathcart Rd, Glasgow (Southside).
He had a barber's shop in Bridgeton.

Thanks.

  Ayr Congress 2014 23rd to 25th May 2014
Posted by: David G Congalton - 02-02-2014, 07:18 PM - Forum: Tournaments and Events - Replies (19)

Following on from the South Ayrshire event I have made a few changes to the Ayr Congress Entry Form to incorporate some of the things that I think worked well.

The website has been updated with the revised entry form and information for the congress which takes place during the late May Bank Holiday.

  Improve Chess in Scotland
Posted by: Ianbrownlee - 02-02-2014, 06:27 PM - Forum: General Chess Chat - Replies (11)

Hi Guys
positive notes here - what would we like to see improved or changed in chess in Scotland let's see what ideas we can put forward here. I'll start the ball rolling, I would like the chess Scotland website linked to a site where we can play online chess within Scotland, for example either play opponents locally or in the highlands. Perhaps an inter-county tournament or whatever. Maybe a centrally structured training module for juniors different to what we have today. Let's get the ideas going.

  Charity Tournament
Posted by: Andy Howie - 01-02-2014, 11:37 AM - Forum: General Chess Chat - Replies (5)

Morning Folks

I am looking to organise a combined World Record attempt and Charity Chess Tournament later in the year (Sept / Oct/ Nov) and would like to hear your view on it.

During the world record attempt we are thinking of running a 2 day congress, 5 Rounds. Entry would be a donation to the charity fund.

Prizes would most likely be trophies and donated spot prizes.

Would there be an appetite to play in something like this?

Thoughts?
