an old thorny issue here; I had a similar debate at a club i used to be in. Simply put bone fide club members at the start of the season got their place in the teams (A+B) by their published grade, any substitutes similarly were placed in the team order that their grading demanded. This allowed players to move up and conversly drop down teams. It saved arguments (mostly).
There were disagreements during the debate mostly about length of service to club, results for team etc BUT the clincher was what if a GM joined the club, would he start in the 2nd team and have to work his way up or would he just be put in the A team, thus causing a longstanding member to drop into B team. Fortunately the logical solution was carried (GM never ever joined tho
) and ranking was taken from the annual grading list.

I see we (East Kilbride) have Cumbernauld up next week in Glasgow League Division 1.
Now, where can I get some "Justice for George" tee-shirts ?

Oh I shall still be present at East Kilbride Alan, my advice to you is to wear Ear Plugs. The only way to deal with TREACHERY is TREACHERY.
Look out for the "I earned the right did you ? " PLACARDS and listen out for my DRUM and TRUMPET.

The GM example is an interesting one, and one we'd all no doubt be happy to wrestle with.
One difficulty is that if the GM (or, to bring it back to the real world, any strong player) joins a club mid season and is selected for the A team the displaced player, in some leagues, will not be able to drop down to the B team if he has already played for the A team, because he's deemed to be an A team player and isn't allowed to 'play down'. The displaced player may therefore not get another game at all during the remainder of the season. That may or may not be the case in the situation to which this thread relates.

I was going to and lighten up this thread by trying to write something funny but this is as serious as it gets. I have known and respected both Ian and George for years and am very sorry about this and it cannot help neither Cumbernauld nor chess in whole. If there is anything I can do to help resolve the situation then please let me know. I know both Ian and George has Cumbernauld's best interests at heart and nobody can afford any ill feeling at all.
I'm sure we've all experienced moving aside for the stronger player. It happened to me when I had a 100% record and was asked to play a game at home when a stronger player turned up and I was dropped there and then . It turned out the stronger player could not play away games, however the team captain has a responsibility to the team as a whole and must follow the mandate given to him by the club..

This sort of thing goes on all the time in football. Look at all the players championship sides draft in when they get promoted, all because the manager is trying to do his best for the club and fans. No matter how much they contributed or how well they are liked, if Messi is available, he gets in the team, and it is nothing personal. It is harsh on the guys who won the promotion yes, but there are two ways to go. Either you are happy to remain as a fringe player with the respect of your colleagues and fans, and play some games for the reserve team, or you want better games so transfer to a club who likes what they see.
In chess, the fans are the average club members and the manager is the team captain. As a player, you are left with essentially the same two options. I am sure there are teams who would be happy of an extra player, unfortunately they probably won't pay you £40k a week.

We have had team problems at Hamilton in the past in selecting Richardson & Spens teams and Glasgow League A/B teams and we have still got issues with the Wandering Dragons match (not from me) going to the complaints team (not me). At least the Cumbernauld issue can't be blamed on me either this time.
I never want any of my posts deleted. A politician/executive member has to be able to defend his statements no matter how long ago they were.

I was at the football today watching my lot Irvine Meadow lose at home to Cumnock 1-0 in the Scottish Junior Cup. I was a wee bit cheered up when I read this explanation to a lady of the offside rule....
You're in a shoe shop, second in the queue for the till. Behind the shop assistant on the till is a pair of shoes which you have seen and which you must have.
The female shopper in front of you has seen them also and is eyeing them with desire. Both of you have forgotten your purses.
It would be totally rude to push in front of the first woman if you had no money to pay for the shoes.
The shop assistant remains at the till waiting.
Your friend is trying on another pair of shoes at the back of the shop and sees your dilemma.
She prepares to throw her purse to you.
If she does so, you can catch the purse, then walk round the other shopper and buy the shoes.
At a pinch she could throw the purse ahead of the other shopper and, *whilst it is in flight* you could nip around the other shopper, catch the purse and buy the shoes.
Always remembering that until the purse had *actually been thrown* it would be plain wrong to be forward of the other shopper.
