We need more chess funding. I have written to my MSP Dame Jackie Baillie who will write to the Scottish Government and will be back in touch when they respond.

This link shows what we received in the 1980s

  Edinburgh Park chess festival
Posted by: JMcNicoll - 06-08-2023, 05:04 PM - Forum: Tournaments and Events - No Replies

Well that was so fun last couple of days we decided to go again this weekend, but double it and then add a weekender into the mix as well.

So at the Edinburgh Park Hotel on the 10th from 7:30 an under 19 Blitz, Friday and we have a Junior allegro from 9:30, an Allegro from 2, then the first round of a weekend Standard event from 7:30.

Saturday we calm down a bit with 2 rounds of Standard and then a blitz from 7

By then the exhausted arbiters, and any players deciding to try and play in all events available, just the last 2 rounds of standard.

Entries have not been quite as we would have liked, so 2 sections for most events and down to 1 section in one.

Chess Results for Blitz here, Allegro here and Standard here. For Vega with no ads or cookies for Allegro and Standard click here.

And possibly a good opportunity for any Glorney Cup etc., team members to get some actual chess in before the following weekend.

Please enter if you can.

  Chess books for sale
Posted by: Andrew Greet - 30-07-2023, 12:26 PM - Forum: Swap Shop - No Replies

Hi folks,

I have approximately a hundred books which I'm making available for sale. The list is shown on the attached three pages. Titles are arranged by topic/price. The vast majority are priced at £5 per book or £20 for five books. A few are priced a little higher due to their fame, rarity etc.

Here are my terms of sale and other relevant information:
* Cost of postage will be passed on to buyers.
* For the avoidance of confusion, the list shows the year when THIS EDITION was published – not when the original edition was first published.
* I have aimed to price these books sensibly, but prices are not set in stone. If it comes to my attention that certain titles can be purchased for significantly less elsewhere, I am open to negotiations on prices – especially for purchases involving many books.
* The condition of these books varies from almost new-looking to very well worn. I will provide relevant details about the condition of individual titles to prospective purchasers.
* I will ask for payment in advance by bank transfer.
* Lastly, being a ‘minor chess celebrity’ as an IM, author and Quality Chess editor, I am happy to sign a book or two in case this is of interest.
* On a related note, when organizing my books I realized I have one remaining author’s copy of my 2008 book “Starting Out: The Accelerated Dragon” which I can sell for the retail price of £16, including a personalised note and signature if desired.

Thanks for your attention and I hope these books, some of which have been with me since the 1980s, may go on to find new homes with some of you.

Back again, this time with a Friday night Blitz and a Saturday Allegro from the 4th to the 5th for your edification.

See the main page for the link to the entry page. Around 40 places left in the Blitz and 17 or so in the Allegro, so far.

Links to draws and result tables , chess results for blitz and allegro here, for no cookies or adverts for allegro go here. Some 16 live boards planned as well.

Heads up about the week after when all sorts are taking place from Thursday the 10th with Junior and open to all events with Blitz, allegro and standard events taking place over the long weekend. A literal pick and mix for all your chess needs.

  Scotsman Trophy-Scottish Schools' Championship
Posted by: Alan McGowan - 11-07-2023, 01:25 PM - Forum: General Chess Chat - Replies (3)

Can anyone enlighten me about the Scotsman Trophy for the Scottish Schools' Team Championship?

The competition began in 1967 and the early winners were:-
1967-68 Boroughmuir
1968-69 Allan Glen's
1969-70 Boroughmuir
1970-71 ?
1971-72 Ayr Academy
1972-73 Ayr Academy
1973-74 Madras College

Can anyone add the names and years of other winners? Did the competition fold?

I note a 2016 comment in the Forum by Mike Scott that he thought the trophy might be at James Gillespie's High School, which suggests that things had come to a halt. It looks like Andy Muir was involved in a restarted competition.

Thanks for any help.
