| Setting chess clocks to count moves |

				Hi,
I have used a few digital chess clocks over the years and generally aim to configure them so that they count the minimum number of moves to be completed in the first time control.

34 moves in 85 minutes followed by 20 minutes
40 moves in 120 minutes followed by 30 minutes

If you fail to make the minimum number of moves then the clock will flag this.

Usually there is only a single mode that can be programmed this way and so all clocks need to be adjusted if switching between spens time controls and club/Edinburgh league time controls. It is a hassle to have to reprogram them.

The alternative is to use the modes that do not have the number of moves programmed and so it is the responsibility of the players (or arbiter) to confirm that the minimum number of moves have been completed. For example on the DGT 2010 clocks we have it is possible to set mode 5 for spens time control, and mode 7 for Edinburgh league. So no re-programming is required, if willing to not have the clock count the minimum moves.

To my question, what are other clubs doing for this?

Reading some other forums I can see that it may well be the case that for FIDE rules you should not be programming the minimum moves in to the clock. it is the score sheet that should be used to record evidence of minimum number of moves being made.

 Thanks,
 Crawford.

Due to being unable to find an available suitable venue for 4th-6th May, the Stirling Chess Congress will no longer be taking place that weekend. I am hopeful that the congress will take place later in the year and will confirm the new dates and venue as soon as possible. A replacement congress at Renfrew will take place instead on the first weekend of May, with results counting towards the Masters Grand Prix instead of Stirling.

Your thoughts on the following please:
 1. When making moves at the board should you be seated or is it permissible to stand?

 2. Recording moves and your pen runs dry. What should happen?

 3. After reaching the first time control is there a minimum amount of moves you need to make in the quick play finish or can you just sit until you have less than two minutes left and claim a draw?

 Thank you.

I would like to update the article on the Scottish Boys' in the History Archive, which ends at 1992. https://www.chessscotland.com/documents/...BoysCh.htm
I would be grateful if winners in later years could advise me of details of the competition, and direct my attention to any Scottish Chess magazine reports, as the competition was not always part of the annual congress. (Thanks to Graeme Robertson, I have the 1994 details.)

 Many thanks,
 Alan McGowan

The sad news has reached us that FM Tim Upton passed away yesterday, January 10th 2018, in Luxembourg...
 Rob McAndrew writes:

'There are many others better able than I to remember his contribution to chess in Scotland.  I do not know in how many Scottish Championships he played, or how many Olympiads he played for Scotland. I do know that he played in the Malta Olympiad in 1980, and the Thessaloniki Olympiad in 1984, where he beat Heikki Westerinen.

He has lived, worked and played chess since 1994 in Luxembourg , where he played for the first team of Gambit Bonnevoie in the Luxembourg league. Gambit Bonnevoie, with Tim in the team, won the Luxembourg Championship for the 2016/2017 season. He captained the team which played in the European Club Cup in Turkey in October 2017, having represented and captained the club in a number of previous European Club Cup competitions.

He was the Treasurer of the EU Institutions chess club here in Luxembourg, and regularly attended the Thursday evening meetings, where we played blitz, analysed league games from the previous weekend, and discussed chess and politics and the respective fortunes of Hibs (his club) and Raith Rovers (mine).

He will be much missed here in Luxembourg.'

Chess Scotland passes on its sincerest condolences to Tim's family and friends, and a full obituary will be published in the Chess Scotland magazine.
