I sincerely hope that 2013 will be a better year for all in Scottish chess. I hope there are no arguments or falling out on the forum, I hope that people will try and get along with each other. If we can achieve this then chess will benefit and remember we are all a part of the chess community. =)

I have commented on some of the feedback we received at/following the congress at http://www.dundee-congress.co.uk/feedback.htm
We have cancelled the Dundee Allegro intended for next May.
Next year’s Congress will take place 11 – 13 October at the usual venue

I would just like to take the opportunity to wish you all a Merry Christmas.
I hope you have a happy time with your family -- no fights over the turkey (or anything else please)
All the best for 2013. May only nice things come your way.

Should the Richardson Cup be FIDE rated? |

amuir Wrote:Main reason for not wanting ELO rating is scared of losing rating points and therefore losing out on selection for a future event e.g. Olympiad team, Cappelle/British selection etc If a player say rated 2300 with a K -factor plays someone 2000 and loses then can lose 13 points but only gain 2 if win , so odds not good from their point of view.
Ok.
amuir Wrote:Olympiad selection depends on many criteria
Hmmm.
Andrew McHarg Wrote:Surely not including all games these top players play in their Fide ratings is going to make their grades not the truest representation of their playing strength? Which - in my opinion - somewhat defeats the purpose of having a grade... ?
Exactly! Why not use the larger sample? As for defining a serious player I would probably consider it those who have an interest in going to one of these events you listed in the first quote. An individual vote seems the fairest way. I have done a poll out of curiosity.

Scots Who Fought in the American Civil War |

An article (by Steven McKenzie) has appeared on the BBC Scotland website regarding Scots who fought in the American Civil War.
Consideration is being given to adding some names to an American Civil War memorial in Edinburgh. One of those mentioned is Captain G.H. Mackenzie, the strongest Scots-born player of his time.
The article can be seen at

Further information about Capt. Mackenzie can be seen in the CS History Archive at

Resignation of acting IJD |

i have read the partly censored post that Robin Moore has resigned as acting IJD. I feel that this is a great shame as I know Robin put a lot of effort into the job. His endeavors and personal sacrifice were not always appreciated and i guess Robin did not apreciate the huge political issues surrounding junior chess. If Robin does not return to the post then it will be a loss. He had to work within existing restrictive practices and despite that I feel that he did a good job. I hope that the people who obstructed Robin will examine their motives and perhaps they may wish to throw their full support behind Paul MacDonald. The main aim is to support and further junior chess in Scotland, i feel that this aim has been overlooked by some in their efforts to oust Robin.
