The Dundee & Angus Chess Congress was held at Next Generation Club, Monifieth from 19th to 21st October and was opened by Provost Ruth Leslie Melville of Angus Council.

There were 130 players coming from as far afield as The Wirral, Machrihanish, the Shetland Islands and Orkney. The event also has an international feel with visiting players from Slovakia, Czechoslavakia, Poland, Malta and Germany. The top rated players were Grandmaster Jan Markos of Slovakia, International Master Steve Mannion from Paisley and FIDE Master Gunnar Jacob from Germany who is studying at Dundee University.

The event ended with presentations and an address by Depute Provost Peter Murphy of Angus Council.

The main prize winners were:

Manor House Restorations Open:

1st: GM Jan Markos (Slovakia)
2nd equal: Alan Grant (Cathcart), Gunnar Jacob (Dundee), Steve Mannion (Paisley), George Neave (Edinburgh), Ed Spencer (Dundee)

Challengers tournament:

1st: Hugh Flockhart (Lasswade)
2nd equal: John McBride (Glenrothes), Miroslav Plchot (Lasswade)

Andrew Bolton Optician Major tournament:

1st: Ali Roy (Carrick)
2nd: David Cubitt (Edinburgh), Keith Emery (Stonehaven), Angus McDonald (Aberdeen)

Minor tournament:

1st equal: Lisa Paton (Dundee), ScottBrowning (Musselburgh)
3rd: Finlay Dick (Cupar)

Saturday Primary tournament:
1st equal: Robert McDonald (Aberdeen), Zak Roy (Maybole)


Sunday Primary tournament:
1st: Adam Shannon (Kinross)
2nd: Aaron Lewis (Bishopton)
