Scottish Girls Team and Individual

Chess championships

Beatrix Potter Centre, Birnham
Sunday 12th November 2006

report by Lynsey Shovlin

The Championships took place at the scenic Beatrix Potter Centre once again and despite being in November the weather remained dry and mild. Having moved the event to accommodate others in June, the tournament was held to decide the 2006 season Champions, we will be holding another Girls Championship in June 2007 to get back to our old ways. With remembrance Sunday and alternative events we were disappointed to only have 21 entries but never the less it was encouraging to see new faces, in particular from Sciennes, Auchterarder and as far field as Dumfries and Ayrshire.

The Beatrix Potter Centre is a beautiful, modern venue with excellent facilities, including the café and shop with the girls doing what they do best… shop! This year crafts were available for purchase which helped to entertain some of the girls during the rounds. In particular the Bankton ladies made some wonderful creations; Hayleigh Gray is pictured with her rather impressive rabbit and carrot.

We are once again thankful Once again we had the excellent skills of Sheila Emery and Arlene Grant whom we are always grateful for their assistance. The tournament was a close run for both the individual and team titles with tie breaks to work out the prizes. As always with individual entries teams were randomly made up on the day, the girls chose team names during the day, which contributed in the social aspect of the event.
