The 2007 Chess Scotland

Scottish Schools Individual Chess Championship

The Chess Scotland Scottish Schools Individual Chess Championship was held at George Heriots School on April 15th 2007 in association with the Edinburgh Chess Congress.

Chess Scotland is delighted to announce that the Association of Certified Public Accountants has undertaken to sponsor the Scottish Schools Individual Chess Championship for 3 years. We were very pleased to welcome Mr Kevin Henry, Chief Executive of the Association of Certified Public Accountants, when he attended the opening ceremony: especially in view of the fact that he undertook a 600 mile detour to come to Edinburgh! Mr Henry said “we are pleased to be entering into this relationship with Chess Scotland, supporting the youth of Scotland in a worthy, intellectual pursuit, such as chess.”

The Scottish Schools Individual Chess Championship is the culmination of eleven primary and secondary qualifying chess tournaments that were held throughout the year across Scotland including Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee, Perth and Glenrothes – these involved 500 children who played over 3000 games of chess! A record breaking one hundred and ten competitors from all over Scotland travelled to Edinburgh to battle over the board in their attempt to become the Scottish Schools Individual P5 and Under, P6/7 or Secondary chess champion. As every entrant had qualified for this event on merit, all players received a medal with trophies being awarded to the top 10 players. Robin Harper (former MSP) continued his steadfast support of junior chess in Scotland by awarding the children with their trophies and medals. The champions and top finishers in each section were:
