HASLINGER TAKES HAWICK OPEN TITLE

22-year old IM Stewart Haslinger of Formby (2440) took first prize of £300 in a strong Open at the Hawick Congress held in the Town Hall, 25 - 27 June. Top-rated Borders player Martin Mitchell (2086) was second on 4/5, defeating Mannion in the second round. In the Challengers tournament, Hawick-based Alan Armstrong came 2nd equal. Full results:-

Open 1st Stewart Haslinger IM (Formby) 4½ 2nd Martin Mitchell (Berwick) 4 3rd = Neil Berry (Edinburgh); Mark Condie IM; Alan Grant (Cathcart); Steve Mannion IM (Cathcart) all 3½ GM Colin McNab went home empty-handed, losing to Haslinger in round 5.

Challengers 1st = David Stewart (Bank of Scotland); George Ellames (Morpeth) both 4 3rd = Alan Armstrong (Kelso); Hugh Flockhart (Lasswade); David MacConnell (Bankton); Antonio Moneva-Jordan all 3½

Major 1st Michael Stanners 4½ 2nd John Smith (Grangemouth) 4 3rd = P.T. Costello (Kings); Anthony Foster; Michael MacDonald-Cooper (Kirriemuir) all 3½

Minor 1st Bruce Wallace (Dundee & Victoria) 4½ 2nd Alex Clark (Dundee & Victoria) 4 3rd = Steven MacGregor; Fergus Thomson (Pentland Hills) both 3½.
