Fair City Chess Challenge

The Fair City Chess Challenge was held in Perth City Hall on Sunday 18 April. Numbers were large with around 145 adults and juniors playing at a high standard. Hopefully it was an enjoyable day for all with prizewinners as follows:

PAWNS (P5 & Under): 1st Weiken Chan (Robert Gordons) 5/6 2nd= Callum Birket (Inverness) 5/6 & Vijay Maharajan (Quarryhill) 5/6 3rd Ali Roy (Carrick) 4.5/6 Best Girl Alana Thompson (Aberdeen) 3.5/6

KNIGHTS (U950): 1st Calum Vipond 6/6 (South Morningside) 2nd= Lynsey Shovlin, Calum Asher (both Perth), James Montgomery (Bankton) & Scott Thomson (Aberdeen) all 5/6 3rd= John Tawdrous (Bankton), Michael Miller (West Kilbride) & Eoghan Morgan (Holy Cross) all 4.5/6

ROOKS (U1350): 1st Stephen Hall 4.5/5 (Perth) 2nd = David Cubbit (Edinburgh) & Lloyd Hughes (Edinburgh) both 4/5 3rd = Ronnie MacDonald (Stirling) & Jonathan Edwards (Balerno) both 3.5/5

KINGS & QUEENS (OPEN): 1st Christopher MacDonald (Hamilton) 4.5/5 2nd= Joe Redpath (Hamilton), Robbie Coleman (Cathcart) & Richard Birkett (Inverness) all 4/5

The most interesting game prize was awarded to Ian McCulloch who played Lynsey Shovlin in round 5. This game attracted the most attention and onlookers therefore thought worthy of a prize by all arbitors for their efforts.

We would like to thank everyone who gave donations and those who helped out on the day including Kim Ingram, Donna Officer, Norrie & Maureen Mathie, Jim Anderson, Sheena Shovlin and Anne Grant who ran the cafe throughout the day.
