Wandering Dragons won on tie-break

The finals of the SCA team competitions were played at Grangemouth on Saturday 24 April.
The Richardson Cup reverted to teams seen more frequently in the finals a few years ago.
Glasgow Polytechnic emerged as convincing winners over a Dundee & Victoria team unable
to field its strongest players on the lower boards. Polytechnic took the lead when Watt
beat Ironside, but this was soon cancelled out by a win by Findlay who trapped his
opponent's Queen in only 17 moves. This was followed by a solid draw between Davis and
Romilly. The remaining lower half games featured very stubborn resistance by the Dundee
players against their much higher rated opponents, but in the end all were ground down.
The master game on Board 1 then finished with perpetual check in a Queen ending after a
tense struggle; finally Swan edged out Spencer to give Polytechnic a decisive 6-2 victory.
The other three events were all extremely close, with tie-breaks deciding in two cases.
The all-Glasgow battle for the Spens Cup always seemed to favour Phones but remained in
the balance as four games reached severe time trouble. When things cleared, Phones were
assured of victory, though by a small margin.
In the Jack Campbell Rosebowl it was even tighter with four games ultimately drawn.
Dumfries fought on past 60 moves in two games in the hop of squeezing out the extra half
point they required, but it was not to be, and Inverclyde's win on Board 2 ensured them of
a win on tie-break.
The women's double-round event for the Robertson Cup produced keen competition. In the end
Wandering Dragons edged out Perth on tie-break, again by better scores on the higher boards.
