Chess books: pdf to Kindle?
#1
Hi all,

Having spent far too long (unsuccessfully) trying to convert Streetfighting Chess to Kindle format, I was hoping that someone out there might be able to do it for me?

If you think you can help please contact me via PM: I can send you a sample chapter in pdf as a trial and discuss remuneration/etc.

If anyone wants to purchase a straightforward pdf copy of the book for their Kindle/e-reader/etc. please contact me also!

Kind regards,
Andy Burnett

Hi Andy,

Could you use a service like this:

There is a neat (and free) program called Calibre that converts books from one format to another - this includes .pdf to .azw formats. As with all these conversions sometimes the formatting goes slightly awry and you will then have to correct. It literally takes just a few minutes to convert and the demo video is very clear. The location is at:
<!-- w --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.calibre-ebook.com">www.calibre-ebook.com</a><!-- w -->

See if that works for you.

Hi Paul,
Thanks for the info - I have contacted some similar companies in the past but with no success. I will try these guys anyway Smile

Hello Gerald, I have already converted the book using Calibre but unfortunately the formatting was destroyed beyond all recognition.

My book is not the simplest to convert as I used jpegs for all the diagrams (as they look so much better than traditional ones!) and I edited it all within MS Publisher rather than in ChessBase/Worddoc formats. So, I don't really have a standard and easy version of it to convert.

I uploaded and converted it tonight on the Kindle site itself and again the formatting went awry - not as bad as previously but still unusable as a product.

I would be quite happy to leave it as a pdf (which can be read on almost every platform) but unfortunately too many people see that as a free book which they will happily share with the entire world! As a 'small-time writer' I can't afford to do that Sad

I'll keep trying though and many thanks for the helpful hints and comments Smile

Hi Graham,

Unfortunately not, and it now sits at the bottom of my 'to do' list, having gradually wormed its way down from the very top through a combination of despondency and despair Sad

Chessbase 12 has new publishing features, including ebook. I haven't explored it much yet though.
I dunno much about ebook formats, but would it be worth a look?
Do you use figurine notation in your book?

I do use figurine notation Graham - take a look here at a sample chapter

My initial ChessBase version of the book is so far removed from the final version that it would be unrecognisable! But I will look into the ChessBase publishing features - I followed their 3-part series recently on publishing which did look interesting and useful.

I was thinking that figurines are notoriously difficult for scanning, or at least recognition, but then you'd have your original computer files before it went to print. Is it all in PDF or do you have another text format?

It was all compiled in MS Publisher before conversion to pdf.
