Candidates

Really like chessbomb red font to highlight blunders etc. Anyone know of any software that charts a whole game so you can see the yo yo effect in games?

Chessbase does, but needs to the user to first provide the analysis. Thankfully, in such a big game as a Candidates match there are many others who've done just that, the info stored on the server, and easily retrieved by other users...
Here's yesterday's games http://www.viewchess.com/cbreader/2016/ ... 29785.html, there's a drop-down menu above the board which let's you choose which game to view, and below the board is the evaluation chart...

What do our forumites think of Nakamura's touch-move incident against Aronian?

Our Quality Chess guys have been discussing it on their blog, which has a video link embedded so you can watch the incident http://www.qualitychess.co.uk/blog/4344

Jacob pretty much hit nail on the head as far as I can see - easy to be rash in the heat of the moment and no harm done.
Will be interesting to see who triumphs overall, we can pretty much write Naka and Topalov off (no complaints there in my view although a Carlsen-Naka match would have been hugely entertaining - massive American hype followed by most one-sided match in history). Personally I still haven't given up hope of a Giri-Carlsen match as I think that would be most fun to watch, although Kramnik-Carlsen would have been best if it were allowed!

Well, I don't often disagree with you Hamish, but..... Big Grin

I think Nakamura was way out of line. The incident wasn't a 2 or 3 second lapse in the way Jacob excuses it, and it wasn't the same as the incident John Shaw mentions (I was right next to John when that one happened) as his opponent in that game immediately accepted that his 'j'adoube' was wrong.

It's hard to tell without the audio, but I don't think Aronian would have reacted like that if Nakamura wasn't trying to somehow avoid his responsibilities?! Nakamura also has previous - plus his behaviour after the game was awful.

Yes, they are playing for the highest stakes, which magnifies errors (including errors of judgement) but I find it difficult to believe he wasn't hoping he could get away with it.

Just my personal view, of course.

Also, I have touched the wrong piece on several occasions in my chess 'career' - not once did it occur to me to say 'j'adoube', it doesn't even enter my head. It's the most basic rule of chess and chess etiquette we learn when we start out in the game.

I've always liked Naka but this was well out of order and damaging to his reputation. I also think it says a lot about Aronian who didn't even mention it in the after match interview. Aronian looks to have put his poor form in the last couple of years behind him. I think a Carlsen Aronian match would be very interesting and by no means a sure thing for Carlsen.

Now a poll up on the blog too - seems I'm in a minority!

Having watched the video, I instantly thought that's a touch move, and have not changed my mind the following 2 times of watching the incident.

1. The piece did not need adjusted (j'adoubed), it was sitting nicely on the square.
2. Nakamura grabbed the piece in the way you do to move it, not if your going to just shift its position a little.
3. Unless the footage has been slowed down (does not appear to be the case), then he has held onto the piece for a considerable amount of time.

The evidence is simply overwhelming for me. As said we have all picked up a piece and instantly realised its going to be a bad move or even losing move. You just have to get on with it and play the piece. I would not take issue with a player saying j'adoube as a reaction in this situation, but trying to falsely stand by the j'adoube I'd take issue with.

More importantly, yesterday Svidler's knight was missing the felt from the bottom and it caused him to drop the piece when making a sliding knight move from f3 to d4!
