I remember that (so not totally gaga!).
It was a CEEFAX tournament with a three way phone connection. The was Alex, Michael and a CEEFAX guy (possibly John Saunders) who transcribed the moves onto the BBC teletext system more or less as the moves happened.
The way it was done was to imply that the games were actually being played over CEEFAX in some mysterious way.
