A chess grandmaster has been expelled from an international tournament after he was discovered using a smartphone in the toilet to check his moves.

Gaioz Nigalidze could face a three-year ban if the complaint against him is upheld.

The reigning Georgian national champion was playing Armenian Tigran Petrosian in the sixth round at the Dubai Open.

Re: Toilet Chess - Geoff Chandler - 15-04-2015

I'm in the process of designing a mobile phone that look likes a toilet roll.

These will retail on E-Bay at £9.99 each.

One handy feature is that if the phone is discovered and
switched on it plays a wee tune and then announces:

"Hi I belong to George Neave."

I got one that says it belongs to Geoff Chandler but unfortunately it's not much use because it only ever recommends s**t moves :o) =))

Re: Toilet Chess - Phil Thomas - 16-04-2015

Serious question here.
Is this the first offence by this player?

If you look up his rating progress on the FIDE site.

He went from 2224 grade to 2422 in just 6 months and 46 games.

Suspicious - in the previous 4 years he had adavanced from 2157 grade to 2224.

Hi Phil,

They just need to be caught once.

The silly way he was caught hints he may be new at this game.
Hiding a phone under some toilet and frequent trips to the loo.
All it needed was some player with a case of the runs and the phone
would have been discovered.

Sounds like he wanted to be caught.

The best method is 3rd party assistance and some pre-arranged code.

I'm also selling fluorescent semaphore signalling flags on E-Bay.

----

Hi George,

I had you down for 5% of the sales.

The reason I picked your name was throw them off the scent.

Everyone knows you could not possibly be receiving outside help with your chess.

-------

I'll be popping along to the Edinburgh Congress before work.

I have a picture in mind to kick off my next column.

I'm going to label three toilet doors: Rybka, Fritz and Houdini.

It's dangerous to go on grading rises alone, particularly if the person is still relatively young, although it certainly could be an indicator.

As an 'oldie', as far as modern chess goes, I myself jumped from 2193 to 2305 in about 5 months last year, simply due to the fact that I studied very hard and played many more strong tournaments than I had for the previous years.

More concerning is that fellow players had suspicions about his play for a while and nothing seems to have been done about it?! I don't, however, know if these suspicions were reported to organisers or not, nor whether anything was done subsequently to monitor his actions during events.
