Today we have lost the legend that was Viktor Korchnoi. Perhaps the greatest player I have ever met, and certainly the greatest fighter the game has known. His will to win never diminished, and his mind remained sharp to the end, but his heart and lungs could no longer sustain his massive resolve.
He died in Switzerland, his adopted home, after several years of failing health. In his homeland he was denied the opportunities he deserved. But he deserves to be remembered by all chess-players for his stupendous achievements and his unparalleled fighting spirit.

Sad to hear of the death of probably the greatest player never to win the world championship.

Thanks to Alan McGowan there is some great stuff recently added to the archives especially the article on Allan Glens’ where the photos are particularly interesting.
The Richardson is now covered in great depth all the way back to 1899 and it led me to the following queries which I wonder if anyone knows the answers to:

1. We don’t have any individual game results in the final for e.g. 1961-1969 so we don’t know who the Glasgow and Glasgow University Union teams were during this period.
2. Edinburgh was very successful up to 1960 – Was D Simpson the same person that appeared in 1904 through the 1930s all the way to 1958? He looks old in the photo in 1958. Maybe Geoff Chandler can do an autobiography?
3. Was Jim Dick (1973 winner) ever heard of again after he left Scotland abruptly about the same time as Shergar and Lord Lucan? Could he be tracked down as a missing person?

The Constitution Working Party has now completed the work on the revised constitution and have submitted the completed document to Chess Scotland in order that it be presented at the SGM to be held on Saturday June 18th 2016.
Chess Scotland has introduced a formal Proxy Voting Form to be used for the registration of ALL proxy votes – this will also be available for download and submission to the Executive Director. All Proxy votes must be registered by 23.59pm on Saturday June 11th 2016.
All affiliated clubs, leagues and other organisations are also required to submit a completed Proxy Vote Form. Chess Scotland is currently in the process of allocating PNUMs to all affiliates so that they can be verified against the membership database.
The SGM will be held at Petal Meeting Rooms (Floor 3), The Connal Building,
34 West George Street, Glasgow, G2 1DA from 12:00 to 14:00 on Saturday 18th June, 2016
The motion for the meeting is “To accept and adopt, the Constitution 2016 as developed by the Constitution Working Party, presented both to Council and Members for review.”
Proposed by Jim Webster
Seconded by Hamish Glen and Gerald Lobley

I thought someone would have started a topic on this by now. No one has so I will have a go. Firstly, I do not think that anything can be proved to be true except those few things that are subject to pure deductive logic. On the other hand most ideas (including political ideas like the EU), theories and chess moves have either been proved to be false or they have not yet been proved to be false. Secondly, any government which states that it is always right and does not allow its ideas to be challenged is totalitarian by definition. So, it follows that it is a good idea to test everything to see if it is false. That leads logically to my second point that the EU idea should be tested to see if it is false. The third point is that we should test the EU idea by leaving. Of course it could have been tested by Greece leaving since they could not have been much worse anyway. Greece could also have been offered all the help and support they might have needed at the same time. The fourth point is to ask - what is the risk of being wrong? If we are wrong to leave then we could re-join. I think this would be allowed because the EU is keen to expand and I think they would also enjoy us being wrong and admitting it. On the other hand the risk of being wrong by not testing the EU is that we might never get the chance again and things will keep getting worse.
