Largs Viking Chess Congress
Posted by: Gary McPheator - 12-08-2016, 01:10 PM - Forum: Tournaments and Events - Replies (47)

Four weeks to go until this year's congress and I can now confirm that this year's Viking Open will be Fide rated!

Full details of the congress is available on the CS website and we hope that this will be our biggest event yet. We are considering putting on transport for the event from Edinburgh and Glasgow, If there is enough interest please let me know by Friday 19th August as we will need a minimum number of passengers to make this viable. We would be offering travel by coach from the city centre to Largs on Friday 9th September with you being ferried by car to you accommodation, and return journey to the city on Sunday 11th September. Prices would be £25 (£17 for 16 and under) from Edinburgh and £15 (£7 for 16 and under) from Glasgow. For those travelling from further afield I would recommend booking advance train tickets which is offering travel to Glasgow from Dundee, Aberdeen and Inverness from £8-£12 single journey.

This starts on September 1st. The Scottish teams were announced back in March but I can't find anywhere who the Scottish captain is. Does anyone know ?

 International Director

As I will be unable to attend the AGM this year, I would just like to announce that I am standing for re-election and would appreciate the opportunity to continue with the work I have been doing since last summer, which includes among other things...

-Promoting Scottish chess on an international level;
-Ensuring representation by Chess Scotland in major team events (adult and senior) ;
-Re-building relationships with disaffected players;
-Seeking sponsorship to allow Scottish players extra opportunities at international level.

The past year, my first in charge of the ID role, has been challenging (with 4 senior events and also an Olympiad to organise teams and individuals for) but I have been helped greatly by many CS members and officials, to whom I am very grateful.

Hopefully, if I am given another term in charge, I can expand on these things. As always, I am open to ideas and constructive criticism and can be reached via abburnett@hotmail.com at any time.

Kind regards,
Andy Burnett
(CS International Director)

Anyone know if its happening this year and, if so, when?

 Chess Scotland Grading
Posted by: Alan Tate - 31-07-2016, 06:57 PM - Forum: Ask the Grader - Replies (5)

I've asked this before and there was not much interest, but Is there any reason why CS grades only once a year. Why have live grading if grades are exaggerated until a player plays 30 games? Surely this leads to skewed results (this is according to my very basic understanding of the CS rating system).

 New Season 2017
Posted by: Douglas Bryson - 28-07-2016, 12:37 PM - Forum: Ask the Grader - Replies (3)

The new 2017 season has been uploaded today - July 28 2016.

The new season data seems fine and includes the recent Scot Champ results.

The previous season does have a few problems at the moment. Pnums are being listed instead of names in itemised records. There are often issues to be resolved in the season changeover.

We are working on a fix right now.

If you spot any other issues please let us know - grading@chessscotland.com

 Lanark Open 2016

Hi Guys
I will be posting the draw and results for each round here. As I have been asked to distribute the remainder of Tom Brown's library each entrant will receive at least one chess book on a first come, first served basis. There will also be refreshments provided, grading prizes and a junior prize. There is also a keepsake trophy for the winner

When does a new player get a grade? I have a younger brother who has just started. He played 6 games last season. Does he get a grade as soon as he has played 2 more games or in 1 year's time? If the latter, is there some way to get an interim grade to use for congresses etc.?
