I've decided to talk about serious chess for a change. I cannot find an example of the Moultrie Defence in Scottish annals (maybe I was the promoter and it should be the Muir Defence) but I have found a great example of the Moultrie Attack. Alistair Hunter was one of Scotland's promising young players in the early 1980s. and I believe he was leading the Scottish Championship at one point. George draws comfortably with a perpetual at the end.

Hope you don't mind but I've added the little chess board for those like myself who struggle with the mental gymnastics of trying to play through a game in your head and who can't be bothered going downstairs to play it out on a real board.

[pgn]1.e3 e5 2.Ke2 d5 3.Qe1 Nc6 4.Kd1 Nf6 5.b3 Bd6 6.Bb2 0–0 7.f3 e4 8.Nc3 Re8 9.fxe4 dxe4 10.Nge2 Be5 11.Kc1 Be6 12.h3 Qd7 13.g4 h6 14.Nf4 Rad8 15.Bg2 g5 16.Nh5 Nxh5 17.gxh5 f5 18.Qe2 Bf7 19.Rd1 Re6 20.d4 exd3 21.Rxd3 Rd6 22.Bxc6 Qxc6 23.Kd2 Qe8 24.Rg1 Bxh5 25.Qf2 f4 26.exf4 Bd4 27.Rxd4 Rxd4+ 28.Kc1 Qf7 29.f5 Bg6 30.Rf1 Rf4 31.fxg6 Qxg6 32.Qg2 Qf5 33.Rh1 Rf2 34.Qe4 Qxe4 35.Nxe4 Re2 36.Nf6+ Kf7 37.Rf1 Ke6 38.Bc3 Re3 39.Bb2 Rxh3 40.Ne4 b6 41.Bg7 Rd7 42.Re1 Kf5 43.Bc3 g4 44.Nf2 Rf3 45.Re5+ Kf4 46.Re4+ Kf5 47.Re5+ Kf4 ½–½[/pgn]

Clever play by both on move 31. It seems as though Black can win immediately with Qf8 staying on the rook on f1, but White has Ne4!! (it’s probably better that this finish didn’t happen).

Hence 31 … Qxg6!? protecting e4 but abandoning the threat to the rook – a good enough move, however the computer has spotted that after Qf5! instead, both functions are retained and justice is served. Very logical – why didn’t the humans just think about it logically.. Qf8 looks the natural move to consider though, as the queen is protected there, I'd have probably banged it er, played that myself.

Hi,

Instead of all this silly grumbling and games where Kings and Queens swap squares I've been to
the Glorney/Gilbert site, downloaded the games...

http://www.glorneycupchess.org/live_pgn.htm

....and have been pleasantly entertained by some nice play.

This is good.

Katherine Shepherd (1746) - Eibhia Ní Mhuigeagain (1356)

[pgn][FEN "3r2k1/ppr2pp1/4p1p1/3nR3/3P4/P1P2N2/1P3PPP/R5K1 w - - 0 1"]

1. g3 {Luft and keeping that d5 Knight right where it is and off f4.} 1... Rd6 {Logical, coming up to have a wee poke at the b2 pawn which is holding the under presuure c3 pawn.} 2. Rae1 {Offering the b2 pawn as a target.} 2... Rb6 {The b2 pawn has been duly targetted.} 3. Rxd5 {The idea.} 3... exd5 4. Re8+ Kh7 5. Ng5+ Kh6 6. f4 Kh5 7. h3 {Checkmate cannot be avoided. All forced after 3...exd5.}[/pgn]

And the Welsh lad Tom Thorpe has a bright future. He is fearless and imaginative.
Here he goes for a player 230 gp's above him.

Tom Thorpe (1875) Conor O'Donnell (2105)

[pgn][FEN "1k1rr3/pp3p2/1np1ppb1/7p/5q1P/1PB2P1B/P1PP1Q2/1K2R1R1 w - - 0 1"]

1. Rxg6 {The prelude to a Queen sac. This exchange sac is to allow...} 1... fxg6
2. Re4 {....this move unprotecting the f6 pawn so....} 2... Qh6 3. Bxf6 Rxd2 4.
Be5+ {This check can be played and then...} 4... Ka8 5. Qxb6 {...The Queen sac
which cannot be taken due to Ra4 mate.} 5... Rd1+ {The flaw.} 6. Kb2 Qc1+ 7. Kc3
Qa1+ 8. Kc4 {And with the King blocking the Rook from the a-file.} 8... axb6 9.
Bxa1 Rxa1 {Black went onto win. Smashing Chess.}[/pgn]

Whilst it would be easy to all gang up on Andy Muir like a gang of chimpanzees I believe a healthy dose of realism is needed.

Congratulating a team for finishing last would only happen in Scotland: We tried our best, played with pride but got the wooden spoon. Well done! So many positives to take from this... Yawn....

We have been hyping players up for years and what good has come of it? I haven't been following the results but the players should go and work very, very hard and come back and try again next year.

But are prepared to comment??

In this particular case, I don't think you are in full possession of the facts and your comments reflect this.

Yes David, my comments were more of a general nature.. but anyway I see the end result which is enough information to gauge how the teams performed overall.

Alan I must be one of the chimpanzees you are referring to? ooooooooaaa!

Its not some much what Andy says but the way he says it. Most people realise that Andy actually means well and in some ways he is just stirring up a debate.

It was Andy who brought it on himself - "Moderated myth by Scottish delusionists: Scotland won the Glorney and Gilbert tournaments comfortably as usual" - I cant see the post or what prompted Andy to say that - perhaps if I could, his comments might be justified. This was on top of Andy wrongly saying players from his own club were boycotting the tourney.

We cant afford to play with so many of our best and key players missing- for me that's were we went wrong.

Alex, the post which prompted me to say this was removed by the moderator

Alex, Hamilton's top junior DID boycott the tourney, the reason for this was removed by the moderator.
