From having a play about with this, it looks like Variations can be inserted using (), although it doesn't look like you are able to follow the variations, maybe one of the Admins can shed some light on this.

You can add comments using {} as Geoff pointed out, but if you put these inside variations () then the {} are also displayed for some reason.
