Scotland's seniors in Poland
#1
Scotland has teams currently playing in both the 50+ and 65+ sections of the European Senior Team Championships in Walzbrych, Poland and all games are being broadcast live...

http://walbrzych2018.eu/

So far the teams have had a mixed start to the event, our 50+ team losing in the first 2 rounds against strong opposition, while our 65+ team have a good win and draw to their name, with some tough encounters still to come.

After excellent 4-0 start in first round, Scotland has great result yesterday against 4th seeded and higher rated Denmark 65+ team with Phil Giulian impressively beating Bent Sorensen on top board in 2-2 draw. Today they play Sweden 1 which should be a good match to watch live this afternoon.

Another great result for 65+ team today beating Sweden 1 by 3-1 with fine wins by Alastair White and Alan Scrimgour and sound draws for Phil Giulian and Ian Marks. Probably will get Russia tomorrow but they are well placed for possible medals in this 9 round team Championship. Keep up the good work! Also well done the 50+ team coming away with a victory over Switzerland to lift them up the table after 3 rounds.

This game really is well worth playing over.

Alan Scrimgour's incisive King's Bishop's Gambit romp in the true swashbuckling 19th century (chess) romantic style is indeed worth viewing!

Shame that the event site's annotator hadn't time to check the correct spelling of Adolf Anderssen's surname as the great man lived virtually all of his life in then Prussian Silesian Breslau, now Polish Wroclaw, near neighbour to Walbrzych (Silesian Waldenburg), second city of the region, that he no doubt must have known well. Sorry! But the iconic Anderssen features fondly in my book 'Great Chess Romantics', so there's the excuse for my pedantry!

The 65+ team are all playing above rating strength and very interesting chess to boot. Phil Giulian v IM Bent Sorensen and FM Bengt Hammar v Alastair White were also both blisteringly decisive wins for Scotland.

Today all the games from the event, including Russia v Scotland in the 65+ event, are live at the event website. Alastair White meets GM N. Pushkov, whom he nearly beat last time they played. Ian Marks on board 4 actually defeated Pushkov last time they played.

Go Scotland! Both teams!!

Sorry to have missed today's live games (sadly funerals of both of our neighbours) but pretty good result against the top seeds and likely 65+ gold medallists. Tomorrow's pairing against Finland 1 is nice one and victory could be big step towards high above ranking placing. Scotland 50+ play local Polish opponents.

Will have to have a lie down after watching today’s 65+ roller coaster but well done the team for coming through despite Ian losing first game and the others looking not too promising at stages. An important win to give team plus score and hopefully avoid having to take bye because of odd number of teams - disappointing with relatively small entry in Poland? Also an excellent 4-0 win today for Scotland's 50+ team ?

Both of Scotland's senior teams lost narrowly yesterday with the last game being a very interesting but difficult rooks endgame on Alastair White's board. Today the 65+ team have good chance of reaching a high final placing although probale silver medallists Germany 1 are likely last round opponents. In the 50+ event there will be a Scotland v England encounter! All should make interesting watching on live games.

Good 3-1 win today for Seniors 65+ team with wins for Alastair and Ian. The 50+ encounter between the old enemies finished 2-2 with Ian Aird scoring an excellent victory over the evergreen Stewart Rueben. Tomorrow will decide the medal placings but Sweden 1 look favourites for bronze in 65+ as they have played all of the top teams, whereas Scotland will probably be paired with silver medallists Germany 1.

Excellent result by 65+ team against the silver medallists Germany and achieving 5th place two places above their seeding and the 50+ team also finished in their seeded position, giving top seeds and gold medallists Italy a tough final match. With relatively small numbers of teams for nine round event there were inevitably some weird pairings in the later rounds but the top half teams all played each other and avoided bye in 65+ event which unfortunately had odd number of teams - are Poland short of old players!?
Will be interesting to have reports from the players on the tournaments, arrangements and the venue. Well done Scotland's Seniors!
