IA Ken Stewart 1942 – 2018

21st November 2018

Chess Scotland is saddened to announce the death of Ken Stewart. Ken sadly passed away at the weekend whilst hillwalking.

Ken held many positions in Chess Scotland

International Arbiter
Principal Arbiter.
Assistant Secretary
Rules and Arbiter Director
Tournament and Services Convenor
Director of Tournaments
Congress Director
Technical Director

His impact and influence was clear to see for all who knew and respected his knowledge, guidance and quiet but efficient way he brought us all into line should we ever overstep the mark

Ken started service for the SCA (as Chess Scotland were known then) in the early '70s as a member of Council. In 1977, he began working with the Management Board as the Assistant Secretary to then Secretary Alan Borwell.  Ken's duties, among many others was to organise and run the Premier events, for example the Richardson Cup as well as other SCA events.  Ken did this, effectively and efficiently,  for many years and in 2007 stood down from running the Richardson.

Ken has remained on the Board in various roles and was re-elected unopposed at the recent AGM having completed 41 years working with, or on, the Board.

In 1984, Ken became an International Arbiter.  From there he was awarded the position of Principal Arbiter in Scotland and trained many of the Arbiters who have come through the system in the last 30 years.

Ken was fantastic servant for Chess in Scotland.  He was a phenomenal organizer and was always willing to assist when asked.  He always made sure he spent time at the Scottish and Glorney, especially when held in Scotland, and has run the Team Lightning Event for as long as many of us can remember.

As well as his commitment to Chess Scotland, Ken was also heavily involved at club level and was the President of Glasgow Polytechnic Chess Club.

We have lost a great servant who has given us over many decades of service, someone who will be sorely missed amongst the chess community in Scotland.

Rest in Peace Ken
