World Championship – Anand v Gelfand
Vishy Anand of India retained his world title by defeating Boris Gelfand of Israel 2.5-1.5 in the tie-break after the initial series of 12 games had finished 6-6.
Preview: The opening ceremony for the world chess championship match will be held in Moscow on 10 May 2012. The ceremony will mark the start of the three-week match. During the opening ceremony, which will be held in the Mikhail Vrubel Hall of the State Tretyakov Gallery, it will be determined which of the match participants will play white during the first game. The drawing procedure will be conducted by the event’s Chief Arbiter, Ashot Vardapetyan. The ceremony will conclude with a concert by pianist Denis Matsuev and other young Russian musicians. The first game of the match will begin at 3.00 p.m. on 11 May.

The $2.5m World Chess Championship match (moscow2012.fide.com) between holder Vishy Anand (India) and Boris Gelfand (Israel) starts on Friday in Moscow. The match continues until May 30 and is contested over 12 games with speed tie-breaks if required. The pre-match head to head stats, 6-5 to Anand with 26 draws, suggest a closer contest than Gelfand’s current ranking of world no.20 might indicate. Neither are young men by modern standards with Anand born 1969 and Gelfand 1968.
