Online Consultation Results

Thanks to everyone who took the time to give us your opinions on prize tournaments.

We had 37 responses and the results took us by surprise.  To summarise the results.

Type of tournament was pretty mixed with a slight majority in favour of rapidplay.  There were comments that we should reduce number of lightning events as they are frequent and easy to play.

The biggest surprise came with what people wanted to pay to play in prize tournaments.  I will be honest and say I did not expect the responses I received.  For Lighning tournaments, the overwhelming favourite was £5 with £5-10 not too far behind.  Rapidplay was £5-10 but the real surprise to me was Standardplay where the majority opted for £15-20.

On the question on having an online Scottish Championship there was overwhelming support for the idea with over 80% indicating they would be interested in playing.

For grading on the allegro rating list, again over 80% indicated that they wanted this.  We are looking to end the grading season soon so that will come in when this is complete

The next surprise was the Standard play format.  The majority preferred the classical Friday, Saturday, Sunday format which with the shorter time controls we use, opens up the possibilities of a 7 round tournament over the weekend. The least favoured option was 1 game a day in the evenings (which is perversely the format we would have to use for the online Scottish Championship).

In the comments section, the overriding concern was cheating and I fully understand that.  I cannot go into details about how we will detect cheating for what should be obvious reasons but we have developed a fairly robust system which has been tested already on events.  We will not use webcams as there are legal and privacy issues around that, especially when you consider Juniors.

Can I thank everyone for taking the time for doing this,  I am currently processing the findings into a plan for the next few months, as well as planning the Online Scottish.  The first tournaments are going to be the Official Online Lightning and Rapidplay Tournaments taking place 20th and 21st June and I hope to have the details worked out and the online entry system live in the next week.
