Jonathan Rowson Award 2011-2012

This year the award goes to Andrew McCusker.

Andrew was first spotted as a future talent to watch at the 2010 Megafinal in Kirkintilloch. He took part in the SJC Chess for Kicks playing in the Under 300 section & other local events but improved so quickly was invited to take part in the 2010 Primary Individual.

He later became a member of Hamilton Chess Club.

With his enthusiasm to learn & also support from the adults at Hamilton he soon made an impact when he stepped up to play in the adult congresses & league tournaments & became well known as the boy who chewed gum.

What has really impressed the selectors for him to receive this award is Andrew’s rapid improvement in such a short time & his determination.  During the season he took 1st place playing in the Major at Glenrothes Congress & the Challengers at Glasgow Congress.

Andrew played in his first International event abroad in August 2011 & has been selected to take part in both Mureck & Slovenia this year.
