On 25th and 26th May 2019, Lindores Abbey Distillery, Newburgh KY14 6HH, hosted the Lindores Abbey Chess Stars Tournament, bringing the game of kings back to the Abbey after 500 years.

The tournament took place over two days and the games were played in the Distillery Still Room, overlooking the Abbey ruins where no fewer than five monarchs once walked

  • World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen,
  • Former World Chess Champion Viswanathan ‘Vishy’ Anand,
  • Three-time Chinese Chess Champion Ding Liren.
  • 2016 World Championship challenger Sergey Karjakin.

    • 3 rounds Rapidplay 10 minute intervals between rounds.

    • Note: The above start times for rounds 2, 3, 5 & 6 may be delayed should preceding games extend the playing session.

Live Games

The games will be streamed on screens throughout the visitor centre for the audience, as well as being live streamed on Lindores Abbey website and Chess 24 (the game-side seats are by invitation only). Attendees will have the unique opportunity to meet and chat with the grandmasters in an informal atmosphere after the matches.

In addition to this the players will host post-match analysis talks and sign autographs.

There will be a live commentary and a roving commentator who will circulate around the viewing audience.

 Ticket Information

Tickets will be priced at £20.00 per person and there is availability for 70 visitors on each day (Saturday and Sunday).

Tickets are limited to no more than four per person for one day only and will be sold on a first come, first served basis.  We truly regret that we are unable to offer more than 70 tickets daily but unfortunately space is very limited within the distillery.

 Refreshments

There will be food and drink vendors on site during the day to provide refreshments and we will provide free on-site parking along with complimentary access to the beautiful Lindores abbey ruins.

Gifts

The Lindores Abbey Distillery visitor centre shop will be open selling Chess Stars merchandise as well as Aqua Vitae and other gifts.

Travel Directions

Rail
The nearest train stations to Newburgh are Cupar (10 miles), Ladybank (8 miles) or Perth (11.5 miles).

Taxi
The local taxi service is Burnside Travel in Auchtermuchty (07902 559 454) and we also recommend Starfish St Andrews (07790 021 000), Falkland Taxis (01337 857 485) and Brig Taxis at Bridge of Earn (01738 812812).

Bus
Bus routes are the 36 which runs from Perth and Glenrothes to Newburgh and the 94 which runs from St Andrews and Cupar to Newburgh and includes a stop at Ladybank.
