Celtic Nations 2021 – Results & Summary

Well done to all Scottish players who took part in the 4-nation Celtic Nations Junior Invitational which happened on Saturday the 11th of December on Lichess.

The under-16 tournament was a 6-round 6-board all-play-all twice between Scotland, Ireland, Wales and Jersey. Well done to the Scotland Under-16 team who won the tournament by 8.5 points from Ireland in 2nd place. A special mention also to those Scots who volunteered to fill gaps in other squads and whose performances were notable as well.

The under-14 tournament was a similar format to under-16 but with 10 boards instead of 6. Well done to the Scotland under-14 team who won the tournament by 11 points from Wales in 2nd place.

The under-12 tournament this year was a 5-round, 6-board tournament (all-play-all once) with 6 teams: Ireland, Wales, Jersey, and 3 Scotland teams. We had an under-12 open team, and under-10 open team and an under-12 girls team. Our under-12 open team won the tournament by a whisker from our under-10 open team. A special mention to our under-12 girls team who performed really well in the context of grading. Hopefully, there will be other opportunities to select these teams in the future.

Many thanks to our colleagues in our sister federations Ireland, Wales and Jersey for making this happen again this year and also to arbiter John McNicoll for stepping in seamlessly after last year's arbiter was called up to the small matter of the World Chess Championships.
