CHESS SUPPLIERS 29th Scottish Team Lightning Grangemouth - December 14, 2003

report by Ken Stewart

After a run of eight successive victories, Shettleston Chess Club lost their grip on the Scottish Team Lightning championship. Five teams were in contention in the final section and in the end the young Hamilton team came through as winners, a result well deserved as they were the only team not to lose a match and would have been three points ahead on a match point scoring system. Edinburgh West came very close, but a disastrous last round loss to Bankton pushed them into second place on tie-break from Shettleston. Stirling scored well in fourth place and were unlucky to go away empty handed.

For the winners, Joe Redpath and Patrick Coffey scored 9.5/11 while Steven Tweedie and Danny McGowan had 8. For Edinburgh West, Jonathan Grant had 8/12, Paul Roberts 8.5/11, George Neave 9/12 and John Henderson 10/12. Best scorer was Douglas Bryson for Shettleston, with 11/12. The tournament, sponsored by Chess Suppliers was well supported by 23 teams, a small increase on last season.
