Everyman 28th Scottish Team Lightning Grangemouth - December 8, 2002

Team Lightning

EVERYMAN 28th SCOTTISH
TEAM LIGHTNING CHAMPIONSHIP
(Grangemouth - Sunday 8 December 2002)

Shettleston Chess Club survived controversy over their team selection and close pressure from Edinburgh West to record yet another (their 19th in 24 years and eighth consecutive) victory in the Scottish Team Lightning championship. In a final section slightly less strong than usual, three teams fought it out closely for the title but Shettleston kept ahead by beating their two main rivals. Edinburgh West actually scored better against 'the rest' but losing to Shettleston was fatal. The strong Cathcart team finished a close third. Stirling, competing for the first time in some years, finished fifth and were the only team Shettleston could not beat.
For the winners, Douglas Bryson and Andrew Muir respectively scored 11½ and 12½/14 on the top boards. Graeme Nolan had 12 and new member Hendrik Kues had the top score of 13.

The tournament, sponsored by Everyman Publishers and Chess Suppliers (Scotland) was well supported by 22 teams, a small increase on last season.
