In early August 1997, while others travelled south to Hove for the British Championships, GM Colin McNab headed east to Koszalin in Poland. It was a return visit, since he had enjoyed playing there last year, although not achieving a great deal of success. On arrival it was a great surprise to find that the tournament was considerably stronger this year: Colin was seeded 24th in a field including no fewer than 26 GMs and 21 IMs.
Colin put in a tremendous performance to finish 3rd on 7/10 behind winner Khenkin and runner-up Gdanski on 7.5.
