Chess Scotland and the Law Society of Scotland have joined forces for the annual Secondary Allegro Team Championships and National Secondary Championships which will take place this year at Dunfermline football club, on Sunday 14 March.

Tournament organiser Lynsey Shovlin, said: “These high quality chess championships would not be possible without the sponsorship of the Law Society of Scotland who have provided significant support in promoting Chess to secondary schools in Scotland.”

The Law Society of Scotland also sponsors the very successful annual Donald Dewar Schools Debating Tournament for secondary pupils and hopes to encourage similar participation of chess in secondary schools throughout Scotland .

Gordon Brewster, Director Central Services at the Society, said: “ The Law Society of Scotland is delighted to announce that its third chess tournament for Scottish Secondary schools will take place on 14th March 2010 at Dunfermline football ground, East End Park . The Society is working closely with Chess Scotland in organising this event and looks to build on the success of previous years. The sponsorship of Lindsays solicitors is greatly appreciated in making this event possible.”

The schools tournament consists of secondary school chess teams, with three players per team, playing at an allegro time control of 25 minutes per player, per round against opposing teams competing from throughout Scotland. In comparison the national secondary championships is an individual event for club players. Both events are organised by Swiss pairings, with all players playing in every round.

The support by the Law Society of Scotland enables Chess Scotland to attain playing conditions which are among the best in Scotland with modern facilities, top quality equipment and a strong organisational team working hard to provide the greatest quality chess event possible for the young minds of Scotland .

The Law Society of Scotland's generous sponsorship has enabled Chess Scotland to provide motivating secondary events with generous prize funds, plus a superb trophy for the schools team event. Chess Scotland encourages all secondary schools and players to consider playing in these events. The substantial prize fund is well distributed which is hoped will act as an incentive for players of all abilities.
