Edinburgh Chess Club vs SK Kamraterna - April 1999

by Willie Rutherford

Whether they're attracted by the famous name and distinguished history, or by the convenient
location of the dedicated clubrooms just off Princes Street, Edinburgh Chess Club has always
welcomed visitors from far flung parts dropping in, from patzers to the likes of World
Champions Alekhine and Karpov. Whoever they are we try to give them a good game down Alva St.
A more recent phenomenon is "virtual visitors" dropping in on the club's web-site,
which was developed by Bill Marshall(*). And sometimes the latter leads to the former. This
was how the challenge match this year between Edinburgh Chess Club and SK Kamraterna of
Gothenburg was initiated (helped with a wee pointer from DB). Through the modern wonder of
email, making the arrangements for this match was surprisingly easy. Kent, the Swedish club's
team captain explained that his club had a recent tradition of doubling up a bit of sightseeing
with a chess match. Last year it was Poland, this year they fancied "doing" Scotland.
As Kent tried to finalise his team over the weeks leading up to the agreed dates, with the
inevitable last minute call offs etc,, he was able to keep me well up to date so that I could
try as far as possible to get a similar team to make a match of it (this became a bit easier
when two of their original four 2300+ players dropped out!).
So we ended up facing a Kamraterna team of eight players ranging from novice on Board 8 up to
2 very experienced 2300+ veterans on 1 and 2. The agreed format was that we'd play a "
serious" 8 board match on the Tuesday. This was to be followed the next night by a
5-minute chess match (where the Swedish players each sit at a board and take on as many
Edinburgh players as they can in the time available between eating, drinking and blethering).
Before the "Serious Match" a few words and gifts of welcome were exchanged.
SK Kamraterna presented us with a handsome, quality wooden chess board and set with plaque.
In return, we presented them with ornamental Lewis Chessmen and a book explaining the story
behind these ancient Scandinavian chess predecessors. Thoughtfully, but somewhat curiously,
we were also presented with some Swedish "Whisky" (we gave them some proper stuff).
To the games themselves. Board 2 was always going to be tough for Edinburgh, and it got
tougher when our intended star got held up at work and Richard had to step in as a last
minute sub with a significant time handicap. However, the rest were fairly evenly balanced.

I think it is fair to say that some of the games were not the highest quality ever seen on the
hallowed wood of Edinburgh CC, but I've included them below for the record. You can add your
own ??'s.

We also managed to hold our own against the Viking raiders in the 5-minute tournament -
a 51:50 final score draw. Bottles of the proper stuff were presented to the Swedish players
with the 3 best scores and also a booby prize. Ingvar was the star scoring something ridiculous
like 13/13. However, the match score was pretty academic as the beer and friendly patter flowed.
By sheer coincidence, the B&B I'd booked them into was run by Eamon Bannon and there was a
football theme to some of non-chess banter. "So what do you Scottish think of Henrik
Larsson as a footballer, eh?" "Oh, he's not too bad, probably better than
average". Some of the Swedes could remember being at Aberdeen's night of triumph in
their city and also talked fondly of Dundee Utd. (for those under 25, ask your Dad about when
Scottish teams used to get past the preliminary rounds in Europe). Strangely, none of them
recalled ever hearing of my team Dunfermline Athletic (ask your GrandDad). Anyway, I think
everybody from both clubs genuinely enjoyed this not too serious match and the challenge has
been laid down for Edinburgh to visit Gothenburg next year for the return. We certainly hope
to keep in touch with these new friends we have made through the international language of
chess.

Unfortunately, due to other pressures, recently Bill has not been able to keep the site as
regularly updated as in the past. Indeed, whilst still an active club member, Bill has found it
necessary to step down as Club Secretary after many years of outstanding effort, for which the
club is extremely grateful. Until a new Secretary is appointed, anyone wishing to contact the
