Scotland scored an impressive victory in the annual junior international match against Wales held in the Brabloch Hotel in Paisley over the weekend of January 27-28.

The under-14 team scored a 14-10 win while the under-12 squad overwhelmed the Welsh 22.5-1.5.

With the half-time score in the U-14 match sitting at 6.5 - 5.5 in favour of the Welsh team it was important that Scotland put some early points on the board in the afternoon matches.

Having beaten the Scottish Board 1, Colin Hall on time in the morning Ioan Rees was favourite to add to the Welsh team total. His opponent Steven Tweedie had drawn with the Welsh Board 2 Suzie Blackburn in the morning and had lost his only previous match against Ioan in the under - 12 international match two years before.

After a fairly even opening Ioan weakened his f7 pawn at move 13 and Steven took full advantage mounting a strong attack with his minor pieces, putting Ioan under severe pressure which resulted in further errors at moves 17 & 18, losing a further two pawns and a knight, leaving Ioan with no option but to resign after move 22.

News of Steven's unexpected early victory spread quickly across the remaining boards and further wins from Gordon Phillips, Stuart Henderson & Andrew Docherty without reply laid the foundation for a great comeback with Scotland winning the afternoon round 8.5 to 3.5 resulting in a 14- 10 final match score.
