34TH CHESS OLYMPIAD ISTANBUL TURKEY   28.10 - 12.11 2000

The 2000 Olympiad finished on November 12th, and after fourteen rounds Russia emerged victorious in the mens' tournament, with 38.0 points, ahead of surprise package Germany, with the Ukraine in third place. The womens' event was won by China, on 32.0 points, with Georgia finishing as runners-up and Russia third.

For Scotland, who had sent their strongest ever teams out to the event, the event was also a success. The mens' team was beaten only three times in fourteen rounds on their way to a final position of joint 26th (out of 126 teams competing) with 31.5 points. Particularly impressive was the form of GM Paul Motwani on board two, who scored 8.5/12, while IMs John Shaw and Steve Mannion also recorded healthy plus scores.

The womens` team finished midway up the field, joint 56th from some 100 teams, with 20.0 points, 7 of which were scored by 17 year old Elaine Rutherford, who played in all but two of the rounds, mostly on board two.
