Scottish chess has recently received a significant boost. The firm of solicitors, Tod & Mitchell, has increased its sponsorship of the Scottish Grand Prix.

The Grand Prix is similar to that operating in Formula 1 motor racing; points are accumulated at every chess tournament held over the year from Hawick to Stornoway.

Players compete in four sections, Minor, Major, Challengers and Candidates, enabling relative beginners to compete for the same rewards as those aspiring to international titles.

Our juniors already participate in a successful Grand Prix sponsored by Chess & Bridge Suppliers Scotland. Over £1000 of prizes will be available for Grand Prix 2001 that starts at the Scottish Championships, 15 to 23 July, at the Glasgow Caledonian University.

The Paisley firm has also donated magnificent shields for the winners of each section to be competed for annually.

The winners of Tod & Mitchell Grand Prix 2000, in its inaugural year, have just been announced: Candidates: 1st Richard Wiltshire (Phones) 63 points, 2nd Ian Robertson (Dunfermline) 58, 3rd Ken Beaton (Glasgow Montrose) 45½; Challengers: 1st James Hamilton (Cathcart) 81½, 2nd Kenneth Malkin (Kilmarnock) 58½, 3rd Walter Pearson (Glenrothes) 53; Major: 1st Richard Evans (Glasgow Montrose) 59, 2nd Stuart MacKinney (Wester Hailes) 50, 3rd Charles Nisbet (Lasswade) 47½; Minor: 1st David Cubitt (Wandering Dragons) 66½, 2nd Iain Hope (Musselburgh) 38, 3rd Glynis Grant (Dunfermline) 36.

They will receive their presentations at the Prize Giving Ceremony at the end of the Scottish Championships.
