A Grandmaster tournament takes place in Gibraltar January 28 until
February 6. Top Scots IM John Shaw (Kilmarnock) and GM Colin McNab (Dundee)
are taking part. John has already beaten Norwegian GM Simen Adgestein
and takes on former World Championship challenger Nigel Short - (read
what Nigel thinks of Scottish chess!) John Shaw goes into last round
(Feb 6) needing a win against GM Jim Plaskett to record his first GM
norm.
Feb
7, 2003: Shaw gains GM norm! After several years of persistence
John Shaw of Kilmarnock gained his first GM norm with 7/10 points at
the Gibraltar Masters. English GM Jim Plaskett lost on time in a favourable
position - but John has found enough bad luck in the past to narrowly
miss out.
