Sep 18: Top seed Nigel Short (pictured right) won the European Individual Championship with an unbeaten 7.5/10. Scottish scores: GM Colin McNab 6, Craig Pritchett 6 (an impressive 1.68 more than rating expected), Jonathan Grant 5, John Shaw 4.5, Duncan Grassie 4, Michael Duke 3.5, Siegrun Macgilchrist 3.5.

Sep 4: The European Individual Championship takes place at the Liverpool World Museum, September 6-15. GM Nigel Short is top seed. The Scottish contingent is headed by GMs John Shaw, Colin McNab and Scottish Champion Jonathan Grant, IM Craig Pritchett, Duncan Grassie and Siegrun MacGilchrist also play. (British Champion Jonathan Rowson was in the original line up but has now withdrawn.)

No player may win more than one of the above prizes.

Free entry to gm, im, wgm, wim and to 2 representatives of each Chess Federation within the European Union. Entry fee for all other players £25 (on or before August 15 th ), £35 (after August 15 th ).

Timetable and Rate of Play: Each round will start at 12.30pm. The rate of play is 40 moves in 80 minutes + 1 minute per move, followed by an extra 20 minutes + 1 minute per move to finish the game.

Venue: Our hosts are the World Museum Liverpool. This magnificent building is in the heart of Liverpool on William Brown Street, and only a short walk from Lime Street Station and the City Centre. The surrounding area is a pedestrian precinct and formal gardens, so the museum is isolated from the noise of Liverpool's traffic.

Bye: A player who is not receiving conditions may request one half-point bye. Round one byes must be claimed on the Entry Form, Other byes should be negotiated with the Chief Arbiter.

Prizes: Where  players qualify for more than one prize, the organisers reserve the right to redistribute prize money.

Refusal of Entry: The organisers reserve the right to refuse any entry.

Refunds: If a player withdraws before 1 st September 2006, half his entry fee will be returned.

Appeals: Any appeal against an Arbiting decision will be directed towards Gerry Walsh (European Chess Union Deputy President). The fee for such an appeal is £50.

Ratings: The FIDE rating list of 1 st July 2006 will be used. Unrated players should give some indication of their playing strength.

Grading: All results will be graded by the ECF

Registration: All players should register during the evening of Tuesday 5 th September. Details of a Reception will be announced. It is acceptable to register by e-mail or by phone. If you do not register, you will not appear on the Round 1 pairing list, but we will make every attempt to make sure that you will be paired once we know that you have arrived.

The event is part of the English Chess Federation Grand Prix. The highest two eligible players will qualify for the British Chess Championships.

All entrants must be members of a national chess federation of a European Union country affiliated to FIDE.
