The 4th Bearsden Christmas Lightning (Open) Tournament

Held on Tuesday, December 18th , 2007

Results of the 5-round “Swiss” were as follows:

First: Daniel Rocks 4.5 /5 (£25 ), Second: Jeff Webb 4/5 (£15)

Grading prizes (£10):

Under 1700 - William McIntosh 3/5 ( Hamilton )

Under 1300 - Brian Stokes (2/5)

Daniel Rocks, sensibly avoiding the mulled wine, played accurately all night and took a final round draw in a slightly superior position to clinch first-place. Second-placed Jeff Webb dropped a point in the first round against a former member of the Club, John Montgomery, when the latter's unexpected and deadly counter-attack netted Jeff's queen. William McIntosh won the under 1700 grading prize on tie-break while Brian Stokes' two points was sufficient to take the under 1300 prize.

Star of the evening was Catherine Madsen (Aagaard) who put in a late appearance with her Mum and Dad. Very cute, but not much good at chess, yet.

Unfortunately, numbers playing in the event were well down this year: several Bearsden players were unable to attend and there were fewer from outside clubs too. So, if you'd like to play next year, please drop me an email (else, I fear there may not be a 5 th ).

Merry Christmas! Trevor Davies (davies@civil.gla.ac.uk )
