World Youth 2013

A win in round 8 puts Ali Roy on 4.5 points, 2 points behind the leaders. Ali's result was one of the last ones to appear, so it may have been a long game. With the early start today, no play on Christmas day and a 4pm start on Boxing day there's plenty of time to recover and prepare for round 9. I think Ali and quite a few others in her section have made the right decison and gave the Blitz chess today/tonight a miss.

I expect it will be another 2000+ challenge in round 9 and I'll have a guess at her opponent being the Russian, Irina Utiatskaja but it could be any one of 14 players on 4.5 who she hasn't played yet, with half of those having titles to their name.

Surprise of the day may have been Ashley Tapp of Canada beating Anastasia Ponomarchuk of Russia (rated 1812) in around 15 moves, in the under 14 girls. "Ashley Chess Girl" is quite a determined young lady who has worked hard to get to a second world championships. Her faceboook page today has a picture of her and Diana Mirza from Ireland, who she met in Slovenia last year.

David is right with his pairing. A really important win for Ali today, very easy to take a draw with Black going into the rest day, but to fight for five hours to secure the full point is really great stuff.

Interestingly, it appears that Ali has already played Irina once this year at the Euro U18s. Same colours, hopefully a different result this time.

Ali is now an internet TV star and may have a future career with the diplomatic corp as an ambassador for Scotland, giving all the right answers to a range of questions from the Commonwealth Championships to selection for the Olympiad teams.

Result just up on Official Tournament Website -

17 49 SCO Ali Roy 4½ 1 - 0 4½ Irina Utyatskaya RUS 29

I think this pretty much makes guarantees a live board tomorrow for Ali in round 10.

Eh, I think I may have been pretty much wrong on the live board front.

Round 10

13 49 Roy Ali SCO 1891 5½ 5½ Pratyusha Bodda IND 2128 19

Hopefully, Ali will be on the live boards in round 11.

Ali finished with 50% on 5.5. Her best result came in round 9 against Irina Utiatskaja. The two previously met at this year's European Youth Chess Championships in Montenegro.
