It is good to see new tournaments on the Calendar. If we want events like this to continue, we need to be supporting them. Inverness is a beautiful City and well worth a weekend away!

Lets make an effort to go!

Less than a week to go before the start of the first ever Inverness chess congress. By this time next week play should be under way and the live boards broadcasting some of the games, via the internet, across the whole wide world and who knows perhaps beyond.

The chess scotland calendar entry and the Inverness Chess Congress website are up to date with all received entries so far. Entries can only be accepted up to 10pm on Wednesday. Any arriving afterwards will not be received in time, as I will be heading North.

With entrants from Bristol, London, the Scottish Isles, the North-East, North-West, South-West and South-East the players come from a fantastically diverse range of areas. There are still places left for those that want to be part of this little piece of history.

Three days left to enter.

44 entrants so far.

The Open looks mighty competitive. Would anyone like to pick a winner? Big Grin

Looks like the title is going to Edinburgh but a win for Elaine Bamber might
get some good publicity.

Fergus Ewing has confirmed he will officially welcome the congress participants to Inverness at 9:45am on Saturday. I would be grateful if players could try to arrive that wee bit earlier on the Saturday.

Fergus is the MSP for Nairn and Inverness. He is the son of Winnie, former MP and MEP & MSP for the Highlands & Islands, was husband of the late Margaret MSP for Moray and is brother of Annabelle Ewing an MSP for Mid Scotland and Fife Region. He is a member of the Church of Scotland and of the Law Society for Scotland.

The latter should be of interest to our new Home Junior Director, who will be an arbiter at the congress.

Elected to the Scottish Parliament in 1999 for the constituency of Inverness East, Nairn and Lochaber, Fergus has been re-elected on each of the three subsequent elections, moving from a majority of a nerve wracking four hundred and forty one to a more substantial total of nearly ten thousand for the new seat of Inverness and Nairn.

Auchmore Renewables have joined Sylvestrus Ltd as sponsors of the Inverness Congress.

The following press release is being sent to media in the Highlands.

PRESS RELEASE

1st INVERNESS CHESS CONGRESS

September 6th to 8th 2013

Scottish chess players have added a new event to their diaries. Chess players from across Scotland and throughout the UK will be taking part in the first ever Inverness weekend chess tournament, sponsored by Sylvestrus Ltd and Auchmore Renewables.

Lasting from the 6th to the 8th September, the tournament will take place in the Chieftain Hotel on Millburn Road, Inverness.

Fergus Ewing, MSP for Inverness and Nairn will officially welcome the congress participants to Inverness on Saturday morning.

The field includes some of Scotland's top young players who will battle it out in the Open section.

There will be two other sections for players of differing abilities. The Major and Minor sections feature a good number of local players, as well as players from all over Scotland, including the Scottish Islands and from England and Wales.

The organisers are trying to attract more tourists and chess players to the Highlands, benefiting the economy and chess development of the Highlands.

Further information is available on the congress website at http://www.hichess.co.uk/ with games transmitted live via the internet on the Chess Scotland website.

Two days to go and some Chess Scotland calendar gremlins have eaten all the entrants on the CS calendar page.

Fear not a full and up to date list of entrants can be found at the Inverness Chess Congress website.

White on board 1 for all sections of the Inverness Congress will be decided by the number of white wins in round 5 of the magistrale section of the XI° Festival Scacchistico Internazionale "Città di Amantea" which takes place on Thursday.

http://www.amanteascacchi.it/int/2013/wwwmagistrale/

Results can be found by clicking on "Abbinamento".

An odd number of white wins and the higher graded player at Inverness will have white. An even number and the higher graded player will have black. In the extremely unlikely event that all games are drawn in Italy, higher graded player will have black.
