Declancey Schools UK Chess challenge Northern Gigafinal
#1
Good luck everyone that is attending the Northern Gigafinal this weekend.

As they have both declared in advance that they wish their games to be graded I know that both Caitlin Reid & Iona Bryson are playing but haven't been able to get a list of Scottish entrants from the organisers.

Ben Volland from Muckhart PS scored 5/6 in the Under-8 section, finishing second equal after drawing with the tournament winner in the final round.

Ben's mother tells me that his first-round game was adjudicated as a draw (clocks were not in use!) when Ben was two pawns up and believed he was about to deliver mate. It is totally absurd not to use clocks at this level of competition, but that's maybe an issue to be pursued later.

I'm going to claim a little bit of (OK, undeserved) credit for Ben's performance: I've given him three practice games in the past few weeks, because the best way for him to improve is by playing against stronger players. Unfortunately, I may not be quite strong enough - the score is currently 2-1 in Ben's favour.

There are some cracking very young players we are aware of that are strictly way off the grading radar but are in good organised chess clubs and schools, who are being properly coached and are very keen with supportive parents. One of these young players is highly thought of and improving rapidly almost daily but struggles to write the moves down. Our team are working hard on it and are making good progress,

Robin.

Other results I am aware of are

Sunday
Caitlin (came 2nd in her section but she is U13 but had to play 4 x U14's)
Iona Bryson 3.5/6
Alexander Bond 4/6
Lauren Bond 3/6
Leonardo Sani 3.5/6

Saturday
Sophie Bond 1/6
Euan Dunbar 3/6

Anyone that has qualified for theTerafinal - beware! as you will be against everyone - U18's et al thrown in together for the finals.

Well done to my son Kyle McFie who claimed 3/6 and exceeded both our expectations in the U9's on Saturday. The blow of just missing out on a Challenger spot was softened with a 2 day booking at Alton Towers. Big Grin

I would also like to add my congratulations to Caitlin Reid, who I went along and supported on the Sunday. She has a good future ahead of her.

Well done to everyone else who was representing CS. We all done good!!!

A link to the terrafinal results at Loughborough. 8 year old Ben Volland was the best U9 in the country in the UK in his section. Look at the ages of the boys he was competing against. An incredible achievement.
