Arbiters - Availability etc
#1
Hi,

So, do we have more than we need currently?
I've asked a few times about the courses but not heard anything back.
It would be interesting to better understand the strategy/roadmap on this:
a) How we're placed
b) What the pipeline and approach is training and progression

There was a plan to run a course in April but again would have been dependant on numbers.  This was reported in the minutes (item 3)of the March 2017 Arbiters meeting.

https://www.chessscotland.com/information/arbiters-corner/arbiter-info/

and from this link (at the foot of the page)

https://www.chessscotland.com/informatio.../arbiters/

you will find the following:

Courses for Arbiters

Chess Scotland will organise courses for potential arbiters whenever enough candidates have expressed an interest. Please contact Dr Ken W C Stewart, 27 Golfview Drive, Coatbridge ML5 1JN. Tel: 01236-431394

I think you have to "express an interest" and suggest that email would be best.

Hi Jim,

How many do we need for a course?
Again, honestly, I remember several people indicating interest previously - c.1 year ago.
Perhaps we could stick up a thread for those interested so it's visible.

If we need them (now or longer term) ; if we've more than enough, then I understand.

One thought I had is that clubs/regions would be able to offer more local tournament opportunities if there were sufficient people trained. Anyway, happy to do the training if the opportunity arises and my wife might also consider.

The number of Arbiters has declined and we certainly would welcome more. As Jim says, please let me know if interested.

The course in April was to be run by Alex McFarlane but was postponed for reasons other than numbers. I hope something can be arranged after the summer. Required number would probably be in range 4 to 10.

Meantime, the best way to prepare to become qualified is to assist at congresses and to read the quite extensive material on this website and on that of the Arbiters' Association

http://www.chessarbitersassociation.co.uk/

Note that new Laws are due to come into force on July 1, though unfortunately these have not yet been finalised by FIDE.
