Lothians Allegro 2012 - Saturday 7th January
#11
100 Entries now! Big Grin

I haven't played in an allegro in a couple of seasons.
Although, like Robin I tend to take too much time to think.

I'm looking forward to trying out a few new things so it should be interesting. Hopefully it will get me into mental shape for two league games on Monday 9th and Thursday 12th.

Looking like an excellent tournament so far, with something of interest in all the sections and not really a clear favourite in any of them.

Normally, I'd fancy my own chances in the Minor (why, oh why, oh why - it only ever leads to disappointment) but haven't been able to put in the time I wanted on my chess, due to absolutely no reason whatsoever. (I've actually been working quite hard on my game but sshh I'm lulling you all into a false sense of security).

Looking at the Minor entrants so far, the first round is shaping up to be almost completely adults v juniors, with Andy McCulloch as honorary top board for the juniors.

If this does turn out to be the case, can I ask the esteemed organisers of the Lothians Allegro, if they could arrange the Minor first round boards, all in a row, with the colours of the boards set, so that all the tall, human people are on one side and all the small, evil, elves are on the other. Can I also ask that all juniors are required to wear small pointy hats and can somebody bring Andy McC an elf hat?

That way, if nothing else, I'll get a laugh in the morning, although I may lose the first game on time due to having to sew up my split sides.

Good luck to all at the weekend, irrespective of age or height.

My wee sister is playing in the Minor (Sofia Chari - she is adopted, hence different name from me). She is 11 and barely knows the rules. I think you and her might have quite a tough game David. :U Seriously though, it's a very important one for me (not least because I'm directing it) because I'm trying to get her to take Chess up as I think it will help her with school and whatnot. I hope she enjoys it.

116 entrants and counting. =)

Its shaping up to be some event.

Every time I look at the Major the number of entrants seems to increase. I can envisage this being fun for Arbiters to do the pairings after a few draws. Big Grin I can also envisage quite a few tiebreaks.

I remember at Glasgow Allegro a few years back (probably 10) I ended up joint third with about 20 people and got a cheque for £2. Come to think of it... I never cashed that cheque. =o

Last round of the Scottish? The Olympiad? The World Championships? Pieces of sugary, sweet cake.

First round v Andrew's 11 year old sister who is learning the game! That's real pressure.

1. What do you say at work on Monday when people ask you how you got on? Answer a) I beat a small child who has never played a tournament before b) I drew with a small child who has never played a tournament before c) I lost to a small child who has never played a tournament before d) Be economical with the truth and don't mention your opponents age e) Suddenly remember you have a very important phone call to make/meeting to attend/deadline to meet f) Reply, oh let's not talk about my boring weekend, what did you get up to, while stifling a yawn.

2. If you win, just how good to you feel. - Answer - not very. If you get any other result, sure you've made a small child very happy but you feel just as bad as you will do if you win.

Kids - you have absolutely nothing to lose. Just play your own game and most of all enjoy, win or lose.

Andrew/Dick

Any idea how many of the juniors in the Minor are playing their first "full" (non-junior) tournament? I reckon there's at least 10.

11 year old girl players? Have a look at the live grade rises this season of Monica Espinosa, Anna Milton and Kirsty McCusker. Aye, and one of them's in my section. Just when you thought it was safe to play back in an allegro. Be afraid, be very afraid.

You're lucky, it's only one.

Elf and safety rules mean that the wearing of Green hats by, Sunny Govan born and bred, ex-Copeland Road Primary School pupils, is not, repeat NOT, allowed.

Andy

Just one more entry lower down the minor order and you'll be excused a hat of any colour. Unfortunately, you'll be with the rest of us in the terrified, nothing to gain, everything to lose half.

To all my fellow minor entrants, I will give you a chance. I shall be playing 1.e4 with white. With black I will be playing 1...d5 against 1.e4 and 1...e5 against 1.d4. Any other white opening will be met by 1...a6....

Or maybe not! The physcological war starts now.
