Wester Hailes Junior Chess Congress
#1
Just like to remind you folks that the WH Junior Congress is on in two weeks time and it would be great to be able to play host to some of the many non-Lothian juniors. Can there be a better venue , with hot food all day and a swimming pool to relax in at lunch time.

Details can be found here:-

Agreed Mike. WH is a super venue!

Will see what I can do to get some along. It's a manic season so far though!

It sure is - typified by our first team day, which is usually our quietest (numbers not volume!) event but this year we had the biggest turn-out for at least five years, with almost as many players as a Megafinal.

When I first entered one of mine into the WHJC there were quite a number of non-local players and it would be good if we can attract more to take part. I think it is good because new faces mean new rivalries and new friendships. I guess one of the main reasons is that there are more junior events and less need to travel to find competitions.

If there are any other reasons e.g. start times or whatever that put people off then please feel free to post and let us me know.

Numbers again are up this year at 83 at the last count, including a very healthy number of secondary school players and players from outwith Edinburgh.

Want to join the fun ...?

Yeah good effort......still not sure why the Primary was played as one section though? Totally devalued the Open to my mind with some of the better performers not getting a chance to play each other. Ritvik for example didnt play anyone over grade 500 and that was the event he was entered in!!!!!

Hi Harry,
Thanks for the feedback and I understand the point you make and will pass them on.

We were struggling on numbers for the p6&7 Open section even before we went through the entries and it appeared likely that some had been entered into the wrong section. I am assuming that we ended up with too many for an all play all but not really enough for a Swiss. In that situation there are a number of options - 1 big section, force the top grades from the u500 to play up or force the lower grades in the open to play in the u500 section and run the open as an all play all. There clear and obvious disadvantages in each.

One must be fair and point out that Ritvik, like a number of the higher rated players, did suffer an early loss to one of the lower graded players and these results kept him and those players apart.

I do hope he enjoyed the day any way.

regards
Mike
