Explanations for taking people’s money and giving it to others without asking are always interesting.

Adam: “I think money has to go to getting titled players involved, because it allows norms, and a better tournament to watch and take part in. Looking forward to some of the tasty pairings tomorrow with them!”

Andy H: “Are we really saying that £60 for 9 days play is too high? It only increases if you didn't enter before the early cut offs! You'll pay that for 90 minutes of entertainment at an EPL game. Personally I think Alex should be congratulated for keeping the costs down while still bringing in GMs and IMs.

The reality is we get chess on the cheap in Scotland”.

Isn’t the ‘reality’ simply that lower-graded players are paying more than would otherwise be necessary, in order to give the extra to higher-graded players?

If this is obviously such a good idea, why not ask them?

We had the discussion on entry fees recently, see here.

+1

Some real unique pairings next round too! A tough day lies ahead for Steven McHarg and Robert Lawson in particular.

The Ruy Lopez (/rʊ.ɪ ˈloʊpɛz/; Spanish pronunciation: [ˈruj ˈlopeθ/ˈlopes]), also called the Spanish Opening or Spanish Game, is a chess opening characterised by the moves:

1. e4 e5
2. Nf3 Nc6
3. Bb5
The Ruy Lopez is named after 16th-century Spanish priest Ruy López de Segura.

Anyone spell Sofia...
