So how do you defend 47.Kg6, every line I have looked at leads to a win

Not sure which position you're looking at Andy but basically the defending side never allows Rb7 without the a-pawn hanging.

When the white king goes to protect the a-pawn (in order to release the rook) then Black checks the king away from the pawn: checks from the side (f5-f6-f7 etc), not from behind (a-b1-c1 etc) which would allow the king to hide on a7.

Strange- didn't your post originally say 47.Rb7 Andy?

47.Rb7 wins since Black can't set up the Vancura defence- the White king can go to f7.

47.Kg6 only draws

Would you mind showing where I am going wrong. I don't see the draw from there (and I love improving my endgames!)

Check out Hamish's link for the defensive procedure

In your line Black should play 53...Rc6! keeping the pawn under attack from the side e.g 54.Kd5 Rf6! and start checking from the side if the White king goes to the a-pawn.

Was looking at something like this

I wasn't going to post on this but I was following the game live online and started to consult a six piece tablebase around about move 40 (there were still more than six pieces at move 40 but it was fairly obvious that it was going to reduce to six pieces in the next couple of moves)

If I recall correctly 42. Ra6 Kf7 43. Kxg4 only draws according to the tablebase while 42. Kxg4 won.

I'll leave those of you who are interested to check the tablebases yourself for the win - I did start to play through the winning line but I soon realised it would require serious study to understand.

I switched to following other games shortly afterwards so I don't know if Alan had any other wins after this according to the tablebase.
